TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the necessity of canceling their ED visa extension before leaving Thailand, specifically if it needs to be done since they are leaving shortly before the extension expires. A commenter explains that the proper procedure involves going to the immigration office with paperwork from the school confirming the end of studies, ensuring that the extension is officially canceled before departure. Failure to do this may not affect new visa acquisition but could lead to complications or fines during future extensions.

The REAL way that works is;

You take paperwork from your school to the immigration office that says you're stopping studying on the date you want to leave the country. The immigration office cancels your current extension and stamps you in until that date. Then your ED extension is canceled.

NOT doing that won't stop you from getting a visa from a thai consulate or entering the country BUT when you go to extend your new visa they will see you never canceled your ED extension the correct way and they could fine you for it.

nope, then you just go out of the country and get a new 90 day single entry ED visa and you're fine. :)

If he's ever gonna do anything extension wise in the country again, yes he should cancel it the correct way. Letting it run out and/or leaving the country doesn't cancel it.

The only time you don't need to cancel an ED visa extension is if you've just finished the 9 months of the basic/intermediate thai course and you are going out of the country to get a new 90 day single entry ED visa so you can do the 6 month advanced thai course. That is when you don't have to do anything about the current extension you're on

if you leave to your home country and not come back it does not matter. If you apply for another visa straight after ED than the Thai Embassy will check if you have cancelled the old extension of stay.

Hi Tod. Not trying to be technical here nor argue. Say he left on the 20th, which is the date the extension expires. Does he still need to cancel the ED visa?
