If you have an Ed visa but want to cancel it, or at least leave the country and apply for a different kind of visa, are you required to do that in immigration or do you automatically lose it when you leave the country?
If you are required to visit immigration, are you at the moment of cancellation on an overstay? Or is the original visa just canceled and you are still allowed in the country up until the date of your last stamp? Imagine you have been on your ED visa for 10 months - have two months left - but just found a job and someone is already getting your paperwork ready for you. I have already talked with someone about this and it seems not to be very clear. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To cancel an Ed visa in Thailand before applying for a new visa, you must obtain documentation from your school stating your end date of study. This paperwork should be presented at an immigration office before your scheduled departure to officially cancel your visa. If you leave the country without canceling, your visa is automatically canceled. It's important to handle this step to avoid any overstay fines, which can be significant.
You are required to cancel any ED extension at immigration with a letter provided by your school - otherwise face a potential overstay fine up to 20,000 Baht (even if you leave and return with different visa)
In terms of the visa, it is is canceled from the date advised by the school in the letter - source, I did it one hour ago. In my case, it cancels May 14, so I have to leave on or by May 14 or I'm on overstay.
The rest - as to is it required or not - my new employer said no, my school (also your school) says yes. My take - if in doubt, get it done anyway. With the letter you'll need your usual passport copies and it's counter 8 at Promenada.
