TLDR : Answer Summary
To avoid future problems when leaving Thailand with an ED visa, it's important to obtain documentation from your school confirming that you stopped studying. You should then visit your local immigration office about a week prior to your departure to officially cancel your ED extension. Merely exiting the country does not cancel the visa, which could affect future non-immigrant visa applications.

Are you on the Visa or an extension??

Yes, you need to get documentation from your school stating you stop studying on xxx date, go to your immigration office (usually about a week before that date) get the extension you're on cancelled, then you can leave the country and have no issues with it down the road.

Remember just stamping OUT on an ED extension doesn't cancel it officially, and if you're ever gonna get any type of Non-Immigrant visa in the future they will see you didn't cancel the ED extension before you left.

Once the ED is canceled, how long i have until i have to leave?

most people have the school write on the paperwork that you stop studying on the date the extension runs out

and that's why I said go about a week before the date on the paperwork ๐Ÿ™‚ because they will cancel the extension and give you until the date on the paper from the school to get out.
