Q about cancelling / not cancelling education visa before leaving the country

- went to immigration with my cancellation letter to find out it had expired (written in Thai so I didn’t know)

- my school told me it’s not a problem if I just leave the country without cancelling and that there would be no consequences for getting visas in the future…

Is this true/ right/ ok to do??

- I was under the impression you had to cancel before leaving otherwise you might be declined visas/entry in the future.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers on the necessity of cancelling an education visa (ED) before leaving Thailand. The original poster faced issues with an expired cancellation letter and was told by their school that not cancelling would pose no future consequences. However, responses clarify that it is crucial to cancel the visa or extension properly to avoid complications with future visa applications, potential fines, and issues related to having an open extension in their passport. It is recommended to get documentation from the school confirming the cessation of studies, visit the immigration office prior to departure, and complete the cancellation process.

so get documentation from your school that says you stop studying on the day you fly out

GO To the immigration office that issued that extension the one in Chiang Mai by the airport, about a week before that date and they'll cancel the extension and give you a new stamp letting you stay until the day you fly out.

Then just leave

Depends if you are on a visa or extension of stay. If the latter you need to cancel it. If you are actually on a visa you don't

Your school is full of it, and unless you're NEVER EVER gonna get a new Non-Immigrant type visa (OF ANY category) you need to cancel your ED extension.

If you don't you will still be able to get in and still be able to buy a tourist visa/get in on a tourist visa

but

you could run into issues applying for an extension if they see you have an "open" ed extension in your passport (one you didn't cancel correctly before you left the country)

AND

you could be fined for it as well especially if you're going to get a Non-Immigrant type visa / extension

I sincerely doubt you have an ED VISA and that you stamp really says "extension of stay permitted until" and has a date <- that is not a visa that is an extension and you have to cancel it before you leave

SO

I would say get new documents from your school and go cancel the extension like you're supposed to, because stamping out doesn't cancel it officially nor does letting it run out.

Great, thank you.

I doubt I have time to get new documents from my school to properly cancel, as I leave next week - but I will try.

You are correct, my stamp says ‘extension of stay’

Below is what looks like where they started canceling and then realised and crossed it out..🤣

Could I be fined upon leaving or upon trying to get a new non-immigrant visa?

@Rachel ******
trying to leave no, you'll get out because the officers at passport control don't care that you can't follow procedure and cancel an extension (as it only affects YOU down the road not them 😉 )

Getting a new Non-Imm visa from a thai consulate outside thailand, nope won't affect that..

Getting a new Non-Imm visa INSIDE thailand or an extension on a Non-Imm visa you got outside the country and want to extend, yep you'll get fined for not cancelling that extension the correct way

Do you know how much this fine typically is?

Thanks so much for all your help & info! 🙏

@Rachel ******
500 baht a day for every day you didn't cancel the extension up until the current date (no matter if you were in/out of the country on a different visa, entry stamp or anything) and it maxes out at 20K baht after 40 days
