Do I need to cancel my education visa in Chiang Mai before making a border run to re-enter Thailand on a new USA Visa Exempt?

I have conflicting information about if I need to cancel my ed visa at the same immigration it was approved at (Chiang Mai), or if I can just do a boarder run (to KL from Phuket) and reenter on a new USA Visa Exempt. If it’s the later, does that mean I can just do a visa run to Satun without canceling my ed visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The question discusses whether the user must cancel their education visa at the immigration office in Chiang Mai before making a border run to Malaysia (KL) and returning on a USA Visa Exempt. Comments clarify that if the user is on an initial 90-day visa, they do not need to cancel. However, for an extension of stay, they should obtain a cancellation letter from their school and process it at the issuing immigration office. Various factors, including scrutiny on re-entry after an ED visa, are also mentioned.

If you're on the initial 90 day visa, then you don't need to cancel anything.

If you're on an extension of stay (the last stamp in your passport says "extension of stay") then you need to get a letter from your school stating the last day of study. Take this letter to the same office that issued your extension. They will cancel your extension effective the date in the letter from your school. There's no 7 day grace period but you'll have until the date in the letter to leave.

Pretty sure you can either cancel it at immigration and have 7 days to leave or leave the country and come back.

From what I’ve heard it could be potentially tricky re-entering after an ED visa as there’s been a lot of scrutiny on those visas and it’s ultimately up to the specific immigration agent.
