I am applying for an ED visa in Vientiane on August 1, 2018. I have a non-immigrant B visa which expires on July 31, 2018. I live in Chiang Mai. Do I need to notify Chiang Mai Immigration that my old visa is cancelled before I go to Vientiane to get my new visa? Is there anything I need to do regarding ending my old visa now, or later? THANK YOU.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the procedure for transitioning from a non-immigrant B visa to an ED visa while in Vientiane, specifically whether they must notify Chiang Mai Immigration of their visa change. A comment responded that if staying in Thailand on the initial visa, there is no need to cancel it beforehand. However, if the visa involves an extension of stay or work permit, those would need to be cancelled at the end of employment, which should be planned accordingly.

If you stay inside Thailand on your Initial Visa you got from Embassy/Consulate you do not have to cancel. If you stay using the Extension of STay from Immigration and doing 90 day reports there, you cancel this Extension of Stay at the last day of employement. You also have to cancel your work permit. Both can be done in advance.

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer to it, :/ That's why I say GO a couple weeks before your actual last day and cancel the current extension and get stamped in until the last day on your contract, so you have time to plan an exit outta the country.

thanks I will search for that post later. Tod I may have to get the additional 7 day extension. Could you tell me, if I cancel my current extension, can I later file for the 7 day extension? Or is it the case that once I cancel my current extension, there can be no further extension?

@Paul *******
there seems to be a switch now and you cancel the extension BEFORE you go cancel the work permit. In fact in Bangkok the Ministry of Labour won't cancel your work permit until you come show them your extension was canceled. There was a post about it on here.

what I thought is that I need to show my work permit is cancelled before I can get the visa cancelled. But apparently that is not correct.

you can take your termination paperwork to the immigration office WEEKS ahead of when your actual last day of work is and they will cancel your current extension and stamp you in until the date on your paperwork.

My employment Contract has that info. I just spoke to my employer and I got the info that it should not be a problem to cancel visa on last day, and can also have option to get 7 day extension for 1900 baht. Apparently there were changes to employment law March of this year which make it necessary to do everything in the last day, rather than having some flexibility regarding timing. I expect the last day of every month will be extra busy at work permit offices as well as immigration offices.

You have any paper that mention the date of last date of employment?

Robert, I believe I am on extension of stay: I have had the initial visa extended every year for 7 years, and I have notified of extension every 90 days during those 7 years. I have been notified by my old employer that it is not possible, due to their policy, to cancel in advance. I have a letter stating that I am in process of resigning, but I cannot resign until after my last date of employment. So I am confused. Should I try to cancel my work permit myself? Is so, do you know the procedure? And as for cancelling the visa, do you know the procedure for that?
