Hello, my ED visa will expire soon (was learning Thai language for the last 12 months).

Can anyone tell me if I need to cancel it before leaving the country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you need to officially cancel your ED visa before leaving the country. It's important to obtain documentation from your school confirming your end of study date, then visit the immigration office about a week before your visa expiry to cancel it properly. Simply exiting the country will not cancel the extension and could affect future visa applications.

AND you will need to go to the Thai Immigration office which ISSUED the Ed Visa STAMP...

Yep, you get documentation from your school that says you stop studying on the date your current extension expires. You go to the immigration office about a week before that date. They will cancel the extension and stamp you in until that date. Then the extension is officially cancelled and you're good to go.

Just stamping out doesn't cancel the extension officially and if you ever are going to get another Non-Immigrant visa (of ANY type) that "open" (uncancelled extension) will mess you up down the road.

My advice just do it the correct way, then exit the country

could you please clarify this? As it seems to contradict the purposes of obtaining a re-entry permit to prevent an o extension from being cancelled by leaving the country. I left the country near to the end of my retirement extension without cancelling it. Its expiry date has now passed and I have re-entered the country. I don't understand how this can negatively affect me when I apply for a new non-o. Thanks.

we are talking about an ED VISA extension not a Non-O based on retirement or marriage or raising thai children. Stamping out on an ED extension OR a Non-B extension does not officially cancel it and it can cause problems down the road when you get a new Non-Immgrant type visa
