I'm a UK citizen & planning on coming to Thailand for around 50 days.
Do I need to apply for an eVisa before my visit, or can I get a visa exemption and extend for another 30 days while in the country?
Thanks for your help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK citizen planning to visit Thailand for around 50 days can opt for either an eVisa or a visa exemption. Applying for an eVisa is recommended as it allows for a 60-day stay with an option to extend for an additional 30 days without needing to visit the immigration office. The eVisa can be applied for online, is processed quickly (often within 24 hours), and costs about ยฃ30, making it a hassle-free option.
it is easy to do. I had mine granted within 24hrs ๐

You can do either. Better to get the 60 day tourist evisa before you leave, it's cheaper and saves you a trip to the Immigration Office when you're in Thailand, plus if you decided to stay longer you could extend the tourist visa by another 30 days.

Get the visa and spare yourself the hassle (and possible scams) of having to deal with immigration.

Simplist thing would be to apply for evisa, very easy process. That gives you 60days and the option of extending for another 30 and no visits immigration required if staying for 50days. Price is ยฃ30.
