Hi, I’m due to visit Thailand at the end of November. If I enter using the 30 day visa exemption scheme (I’m a UK passport holder), is it possible to extend my visa for a further 30 days? And if so how do I do this?
I’ve looked at applying for the 60 day tourist visa in the UK but as far as I can tell you have to have proof of flights from the UK (as well as exit flights) and I was planning on flying to Singapore and then travelling through Malaysia to Thailand. Is that correct that I can only get a 60 day tourist visa if I have a direct flight from the UK?
Finally, is another option to exit Thailand to another country and then return? Would I be able to get a second 30 day visa exception if I did this? And would there be any minimum amount of time that I would have to be out of Thailand for eg could I return the next day?
Many thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
As a UK passport holder entering Thailand under the 30-day visa exemption scheme, you can extend your stay for an additional 30 days at any Immigration Office. While applying for a 60-day tourist visa from the UK generally requires proof of onward travel, it suffices to have a flight to a neighboring country rather than a direct flight back to the UK. If you exit Thailand and re-enter, you can receive another 30-day visa exemption, with the stipulation that some borders may require a minimum overnight stay before re-entry.
Thanks for the info. I have booked a flight already, it’s just to Singapore and I planned to travel over land/sea to Thailand. I couldn’t make out from the Thai embassy’s website if this was acceptable or not.
You can enter visa exempt with a UK passport for 30 days and extend once for 30 days. Whether your airline will allow you to board without an exit ticket within the 30 days is questionable.
You can leave Thailand and return and get another visa exempt entry - also extendable. Depending on the border you use there normally isn’t a limit on the amount of time needed to be out of Thailand but some insist on an overnight stay.
Thank you. I have heard of people “reserving” exit flights to show on entry into Thailand. Do you know if these are considered acceptable proof of onward travel? Thanks
You can extend for 30 days at any Immigration Office, it’s fairly straightforward.
You don’t need a return flight to get a Tourist Visa, an onward flight to a neighbouring country is fine. Whether they’d accept a flight to Singapore, I don’t know but the London Embassy is pretty good to deal with so it’s worth asking.
