TLDR : Answer Summary
If you hold a single entry ED visa and plan to cross the Mae Sai border into Myanmar for a day trip, you will need to obtain a re-entry permit. This is because crossing the border will terminate your current stay in Thailand. There was previously a system allowing for a "VIP pass" that didn't require a stamp, but that system is no longer in place. Any status other than a multiple entry visa requires a re-entry permit to maintain your stay.

I think when they started the TWO 30 day visa exempt entries in a calendar year rule (Dec 31st 2016) they stopped letting people into Tachiliek without stamping you out of thailand :/

There used be a "VIP pass" system at the Mae Sai border where you paid 100B to Thai Immigration and they would hold your passport while you went over to Myanmar to go shopping or whatever. The way this worked, your passport stayed with Thai immigration and was not stamped, it was as if you never left Thailand. I believe this system ended a few years back, but this did used to be an option so it's not an unreasonable idea.

Got it, thanks guys, for some reason I thought there might be an exception for that day trip. These re entry permits are seriously annoying and wasting away my passport pages.

I agree with Robert, you're confusing the price of a re-entry permit (which is 1000baht for a single) with the price of an extension (which is 1900baht)

I guess you confused between two things, an Extension of Stay is 1.900 Thb, a Single Re-Entry permit is 1.000 Thb and the Multiple Re-Entry permit is 3.800 Thb.

You need an reentry permit for any status except for visas that are explicitly “multiple entry” (e.g. multiple entry tourist visa). So yes, you need one.

I guess you had a single entry ED visa, used this to entry Thailand and got 90 days Admitted to Stay. If you leave this stay will be terminated OR you must have the a re-entry permit to get the same Admitted to Stay date as you have now stamped in your passport.
