Hi, my wife and I are planning to move to Chiang Mai in January 2026. I am 52 and am going to apply for Non OA visa here in the UK. My wife however is 45 (she is also a UK citizen) and doesn’t qualify for a retirement visa. Am I right in thinking she would apply for a non O visa as a dependant here in the UK, the travel with me to Thailand and apply for an extension of the O at immigration in Thailand during her 90 day stay. Am I missing something obvious? We have all the financial means so that’s not an issue. Any advice would be welcome.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is planning to relocate to Chiang Mai with their wife, applying for a Non OA visa due to their age. The wife, being under 50, does not qualify for a retirement visa and intends to apply for a Non-O visa as a dependent in the UK. The user seeks clarification on the process, particularly about extending the Non-O visa in Thailand after arriving.

Have you considered a DTV for your wife until she reaches retirement age of 50?

DTV lasts 5 years

thanks for the advice about insurance etc. we’ve been planning the move for two years so have researched a lot of the options and visas, it’s just that there is very little information about my spouse travelling as a dependant and thought it worth asking the question in case others have actually done the same thing.

Theywill probably direct you, as the sponsor, to the 365-days Non-Imm-O/A visa, and once it got issued, your wife can apply to the dependent Non-Imm-O based on your O/A visa

complete nonsense. He is not married to a Thai wife. A Non-Imm-O/A visa is issued for 1 year. The financial requirements for a UK citizen are 800,000 THB equivalent in his home bank account, or proof of a minimum income of 65,000 THB equivalent. This visa comes with a mandatory health insurance, for the first two years he is free to choose any insurer. The LMG insurance for yearly 8000 THB premium is NOT available any more, since 2019, for Non-Imm-O/A visa and for O/A extensions

I would have contacted the embassy and asked them if they would allow a trailing spouse visa on a Non O-A. Not all embassies still issues this. But your plan in general is correct and here are the requirements for a 90 days Non O visa visiting non Thai family also called trailing spouse visa.
