Hey, just wanted to check something... my UK citizen wife and I plan to retire on Non 'O' 50+ annual extension of stays for 1yr each time. Can my UK citizen wife be a dependent on my Non 'O' and therefore avoid having to deposit 800k each in the bank?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry concerns whether a UK citizen spouse can be a dependent on a Non 'O' retirement visa in Thailand, thus bypassing the requirement of maintaining a separate 800,000 THB deposit. It is clarified that the spouse can apply for a 90-day Non-O visa before arriving, allowing her to join on the main applicant's extension. If she doesn't apply prior to arrival, she cannot obtain this visa in Thailand as a dependent.

I was about to ask the exact question. My husband and I will be relocating to Chiang Mai. So if we apply together, we only need one lot of 800,000 THB in an account as a couple?

The 800k must be in an account in the name of the person getting the non-o for retirement. If it's a joint account then you need to double that.

but if I go as a dependant does the rule apply?

You both apply for Non-O visas before you come here
@Ju**
, your husband based on being over 50 and meeting the financial requirements, you based on being married to someone on a 'retirement' visa

When you get here you'll both get stamped in for 90 days, then your husband gets a year extension by having the 800K baht in a thai bank account in his name only for 2 months before he applies for the extension and you get a matching yearly extension based on being the "trailing spouse" of someone on a retirement extension.

edited out bad info :P

Great, thank you. That makes perfect sense. At least we don't have to cough up 1.6 million THB in an account. I thought I'd read that somewhere.

the rule on having 800k in a bank account solely in the name of the applicant always applies. If it's a joint account you need double the amount.

, just FYI. They consider the half of the amount of joint account is for each name. That's why you need it double when using a joint about. Doesn't matter how many people apply for a visa on that account.

If she applies for a 90 day Non-O visa BEFORE she comes here she can piggy back onto your extension. Unfortunately if she doesn't there's no way for her to get that visa issued in country as being the spouse of a person on a retirement visa here

many thanks for getting back. My plan is for both of us to get new passports in the UK and then apply for a 90 day Non 'O' based on retirement at the embassy in London. If our travel plans work out my wife will be 49yrs 8months when we apply. My plan is for her to piggyback on my 90 day retirement Non 'O' when we apply in London. I'm pretty sure this works but can't find any info on the embassy site right now (only Covid info). Assuming things return to the way they were prior to Covid, is it right that my wife can piggyback on the initial 90 day non 'O' even though she's not quite 50? Then we would have our ducks in a row for the extension of stay presumably?

it looks like London are now issuing non immigrant O visas again. They did stop.

Just check the financial requirements that sound a little strange.

Financial evidence e.g. A copy of pension statement if the applicant is a pensioner, or a copy of 1-month bank statement showing your income from pension, or 3-month bank statement of at least £10,000

The way this reads is that you only need one month proof of income (65, 000 Baht equivalent) or you need £10,000 in your account for 3 months. This is a definite change of requirements.

thanks Andy. Can the 90 day non 'O' be extended in Thailand? Just thinking that 90 days is a little tight to open a bank account and get the 800k transferred and matured for 2 months in time to apply for the year extension 2 weeks before the 90 days expires.

@Tony *********
yes it can be extended and yes it can be extended for a year. You make a really good point that it is going to be very tight. You are going to have to open the bank account and transfer the money in as soon as you get out of quarentine.

At the moment you may get a little bit of help though the unable to travel due to COVID 60 day extension. This is due to end on the 30th May but is likely to be extended. Keep an eye on this group I am sure there will be a post if and when it is extended.

under 'normal' circumstances is it possible to extend the 90 day 'O' for less than a year e.g. 30 days to buy more time for the 800k transfer and maturity? Or, do you have to show 800k matured for any length of 'O' extension based on retirement?
Ellie *******
@Tony *********
there is not other extension than 1 year for Non-O based on being over 50 or spouse to that person.
Andy ********
@Tony *********
under normal conditions you have plenty of time because you don't need to isolate in an ASQ for 15 days.
Ellie *******
@Tony *********
Your understanding is right. She can apply for Non-O dependant (spouse) on you regardless of her age.
