TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses the possibility of converting a Non-O retirement extension to a Non-O marriage visa without leaving Thailand. Users share experiences indicating it is possible to change the basis for the visa extension directly at the immigration office, although some offices may require exiting the country. Individual interpretations by different immigration offices vary, highlighting the need for confirmation with the local office.

Check your local Immigration office. I tried at mine and was told I would have to leave Thailand and return. Most offices do but check first.

So weird. I was told by Trat Immigration that because I had an OA retirement visa I would have to leave Thailand and return but if I had an O visa I could convert there and then to a marriage O if I had all the correct paperwork?

What was the way you used last year when you got your extension based on retirement to meet the proof of funds? Did you use the 800K baht banked money OR did you use the monthly incoming transfers of 65K baht?

- I was told by an agent I had to let it lapse and then do it ... another agent told me she had been to immigration with client and they said it is not possible - so a lot of conflicting stories ... is there anything written down to show this is possible ?

Do keep in mind when you apply for a yearly extension based on marriage, you get a 30 day under consideration stamp FIRST, (and usually they come to your house and do an in home visit during that 30 days too) and then you go back and get the year extension inked in

if you have done the marriage/Thai wife extension before, then there is no reason to waste money on an agent to help you. If this is the same wife, and you kept your old documents, then you only need two documents updated, your bank letters, and passbook copies, and your pictures. Everything else is the same. It is good to go in a little more than 30 days before your current extension expires, as you'll have the 30 day under consideration stamp, then your new extension will be dated from the expiration date of your retirement extension.

If you're going to "push your own paper" <- go to the immigration office and get your own extension, then definitely go out there well before with your wife and get the scoop on things there at your office. People bitch, piss and moan about doing that but it really DOES pay off rather than showing up with half of what you need on the day you're applying for the extension

@An**
you were told a crock of shit answer.

People change the "reason for their extension" all the time.; from marriage to retirement, or retirement to marriage. There's no issue with it at all.

What you're not doing is getting a new Non-O VISA inside the country, as I said you're just changing the reason for your yearly extension.

I would go out to your immigration office well before you need this next extension, (with your thai wife in tow) and get the hand out listing the documents, the photos, copies of this or that, which are required for the marriage extension. (It is a pile 'o paper :P ). AND have your wife ask if there's anything NOT on the hand out that is required too (sometimes there is).

- thanks I will do that ... I had a marriage visa before but changed to retire as it is a bit easier . I have an agent to help me as well ... just want to be sure it can be done

The reason I ask IS, if you used banked money method you need to continue to follow the terms on that extension (have had the 800K in the bank account for 3 months after you got the extension and then not have let the account go below 400K baht for the rest of the year) AND you need to also meet the requirements to apply for the marriage extension (have 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you apply)

Totally IS possible. You just change the reason for your next extension of stay from one based on retirement to one based on marriage
