Hi all, not sure if this will be allowed by admin as it’s not strictly visa related. I entered Thailand on 11 Jan on a non O Visa - thanks largely to this group for great advice and guidance.

Purpose of visa was to open a bank account ( again thanks for advice in this group) to finalise my brother’s financial affairs- my brother lived in Chiang Mai and was killed in a motorcycle incident. I closed my brother’s account and transferred funds across, there is also compensation payout to come. My question is has anyone transferred a large sum of money internationally and what cost am I likely to pay ?

I live in Australia for context Any advice much appreciated thanks 🙏

Does anybody know which thai bank the wise app uses?

I know they send to most banks but the actual bank they deal with will show international transfer on bank statement. Which is needed for when I go for non o 90 day.

Still trying to obtain bank account. Was able to open account with GSB (Government Savings Bank) but found out today that there will be a problem transferring from USA bank with Wise app. They also told me when I opened the account that I couldn’t access their mobile banking app to check deposits, balances, etc because I wasn’t a Thai citizen but I could check at ATM. I asked about mobile banking website and they said yes. Today they said website was no longer supported. Went to Krungsri bank and they couldn’t get their scanner to read chip in my 2 month old passport. They also said I couldn’t use their mobile app or their banking website because they aren’t available to anyone over 70 (seriously??). They didn’t even answer my questions about Wise transfers and annual reporting. Going to try different branch of Kasikorn with my immigration residence certificate in hand and my wife not after being rejected because she wasn’t able to exactly sign documents the same due to dementia. Does any of this crap get easier??

hello. I have a very specific question. I am in Thailand half the year in Canada half the year. I have a year round condo rental.

With this visa, we can obviously not get a bank account.

I am wondering how people pay their bills during the time they are not in Thailand.

Specifically, I am looking to pay my true phone bill, my water bill, my electric bill and my cable bill

I really appreciate any information you can offer

Hello Group. I’ve seen a variety of posts regarding the setting up of a bank account and depositing the 800,000 Baht required for retirement visa. But my question is this, if transferring funds via the Wise App. Should I exchange the amount into Baht first and then transfer or just transfer the foreign equivalent and let the bank calculate the exchange rate ?

Am just wondering what charges would apply for either or both options.

Thank You 😊

I know that this topic has been discussed at length over the last 2 or 3 days but I have spent the last two sorting out with Wise how to get future transfers tagged as international. The information I have got could still be of use to people who rely on this for their visa extensions. I have posted it elsewhere but it has got lost in very long threads.

I contacted Wise and asked why the option long term stay had been removed. I got my Bangkok bank account tagged by supplying its details to Wise. I was then given the following information about how to get transfers tagged international. I tried three transfers two of which have only just appeared in my account. I hope this post gives some relief to people who are concerned..

I will be retiring to Thailand next month. How is it best to transfer funds from a UK bank...Barclay..to a Thai bank account whilst in Thailand. My phone app doesn't offer the Thai baht as a currency to transfer..and I am not sure if I would be able to access my bank account online by computer. Is it best to go through an agency to transfer money ? What to do for the best. Any advice appreciated.

Update on Retirement Visa supported by transfers using Wise App.

A couple weeks back I lodged a question to the group concerning how to show the required 65,000 baht monthly influx of foreign funds into my Thai bank account.

I was concerned because I had been using the Wise (formerly “TransferWise”) money transfer app which does not actually involve a transfer of money directly from my American bank into my Thai bank account. Instead, Wise uses local partners such as Kasikorn Bank or Deemoney, who then transfer the money domestically into my local bank account. I did not know to use the “funds for long stay in Thailand” option when choosing a reason for the transfer. As a result, not one of my transfers into the country appeared as foreign transfers on my one-year statement for Bangkok BANK. In addition, I never sent 65,000 baht in one lump sum, although that amount was reached cumulatively over the course of each month in several tranches as the need arose.

The summary consensus view from the comments made in reply to my questions was that I had no chance of renewal because I had done everything wrong: I used Wise, I didn’t choose the right reason for the transfer, I didn’t transfer in lump sum payments in regular intervals, and so forth.

I am happy to report that there were absolutely no issues today when I receive my one-year extension with multiple reentry permit from the Chiang Mai immigration office.

I provided immigration with confirmation letters from Deemoney and Kasikorn bank that the (38!) money transfers originated from my American bank. To facilitate their work, I provided them with the transfer confirmations I downloaded from my account on the Wise website which indicated the date of the transfer, the amount, and the identity of the local partner. Kasikorn bank was able to produce the necessary letter in about 90 minutes. It took Deemoney about 36 hours to deliver the letter to me. It took 7 days for Bangkok BANK to produce the one-year statement. But armed with that statement and the confirmation letters from the two Wise local partners, I spent less than an hour in the immigration office before I was given back my passport with the requested 1-year Visa renewal and multiple re-entry permit.

While I appreciate the thoughtful comments by those who gave a pessimistic prognosis of my chances, my advice is to use what you read on Facebook as a guide to what the issues may be, but do not be deterred simply on that basis. The immigration office in my case acted promptly and professionally without any punctilious attention to nits that some thought might derail the process. Yay for them.
