What are the best alternatives to Wise for transferring money between the US and Thailand?

Update: it took me less than 60 seconds to open an account, set up a transaction between US and Thai accounts, and receive the funds using remitly. The first time used, the transaction fee of $1.99 was waived with an exchange rate that was 0.12 baht per dollar less than what wise showed at the exact same time, which means 120 baht less per $1,000 usd sent. Comes out to be a bit cheaper than wise in fees/conversion, even if you calculated in the 1.99. Thank you everyone who suggested Remitly.

Anyone have a good alternative to Wise for transferring funds between personal accounts in America and Thailand? I used wise for 6 years for the same thing and all of a sudden they are asking for crazy amounts of information, cancelling transactions because after I provide what they ask, they say they need additional information, it’s kinda gotten ridiculous. I’m open to starting a new bank account with a U.S. bank if that can make things more easy. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the challenges some expats face when using Wise for money transfers between the US and Thailand. Users express frustration over increased verification requests and canceled transactions. Several alternatives to Wise are suggested, including Remitly, MoneyGram, and Xoom, with various users sharing their positive experiences with these services. Some expats also mention using their banks for transfers, with suggestions for specific banks and insights into fees and transfer times. Overall, many contributors highlight the importance of finding reliable and efficient methods for transferring money internationally.

Only problem with remitly is it doesn't appear in your thai bank account as an international transfer, at least last time I tried it

Surprised to see people are having issues with “Wise” accounts, I use them twice a month to send money from UK to Thailand and never had a complaint regarding their process?
Stephen *******************
@Alex ****
yes I agree it could be another country’s policy which is causing issues, I’ll just carry on using them as usual 👍
Brian *****************
They are obligated to by law, all of my Wise type accounts have been soliciting information.

I'm interested!

Yes keep asking for ID. I've been using Money Grab . com if you have a VISA debit card able to receive better exchange rates than Wise.
Melanie ********
I use Wise at least twice a week I’ve never had to answer multiple questions
Vitico ********
I had a similar problem and stopped using them because of that. Now i use the “moneygram” app. It gives me a better exchange rate, but kind of slow. Sometimes you will get your money in a day or two sometimes it takes 5 or 6 business days so if there is a holiday in the week it might drag on

Remitly all the way !! I use wise also and it’s true , they can be an unpredictable pain sometimes…
Ishtar ********
xoom.com - which is owned by Paypal, works well for me sending to Indian bank accounts from my US bank account. I assume that Thailand is in its system.

I went through this problem with Wise when I was working in Afghanistan and sending money from the UK to Thailand. Had to provide work contract and loads of other documents. In the end they closed my Wise account. I was raging and sent them a nasty email saying that they allowed me to send money for 3 years like this but now I cant. I demanded all the commission back that they had taken over the 3 years but got nothing.

Only when I stopped working in Afghanistan they reactivated my account and that took months.

Remitly

I'm in your boat and the best oar was wise. Let me know if you find something better
David *********
No qualms with Wise, highly recommended
Kevin *******
Remitly and Moneygram that's in the uk moneygram is through the post office ! Very happy with it for now !
Lynnette *******
Just used it yesterday from uk. No questions asked. Took less than a minute for money to be received.

I do wire transfers routinely between Schwab bank account and Bangkok Bank. Fee is $15, more you send the better the savings. I usually move money twice a year (or if dollar doing particularly well).
Darin **********
@Mark *****
have you ever tried sending money back though? From BKK to schwab. Curious if easy or not.
Mark ******
@Darin *********
No, and I suspect it may not be as easy but have never inquired. Probably the only time I would inquire is if I decided to depart Thailand permanently and move whatever my account balance was and shut it down (but I have no plans for doing that).
Louis ************
Download Remitly. I believe it’s a little cheaper than Wise. It’s been easy to use.
Dan ********
@Louis ***********
not cheaper than wise ever.

I had same issue in jan. Wise both US and GBP accounts don't accept transfers FROM Thailand.

On other hand from Wise GBP to Thailand banks it takes seconds.

With Wiseits one way street at the moment 🤦🏻

from BKK bank to say chase? Don't they ask for verification above 50k baht outgoing?

Xe, I use all the time. Started having problems with Wise so I changed

The theives are getting so good! I suspect those extra requirements are to thwart those devilish bastards from draining your account.

Especially from regular cell phone or windows PC. Be more and more careful as time goes on. What was safe three years ago is not safe today. Never use public wifi ( man in the middle attack) and never...well , never do a hundred things that were safe a few years ago. Double then triple your fraud awareness, take extra precautions!! The theives are sharpening their craft every day! Good luck!!

Agree. So much spyware out there from seemingly innocous websites, news stories, picture links, etc. Easy to get infected at some point without very good protection.

USD to Coinbase, convert to USDT, send to Bitkup, convert to THB, deposit to your Thai bank. Quick, cheap and usually by far the best rates.

And yes, you will have to do KYC

ach that’s too bad - I read that Binance now has a license for Thailand so hopefully soon…

@Don ********
why just not open a Thai acc in wise and transfer inside the system?

if you have a moderate amount of trading skills you can usually beat the Wise exchange rates

It's not wises fault. You will have the same questions asked by any other company

@Paul ********
it probably is, I've had issues with wise in the past. Send 30+ documents of income, bank statements, etc. And they still weren't satisfied
Thomas *********
A lot of people make the mistake with Wise. They open their account and don't get it 'verified' via Wise Customer Support.

You can use Chase or Dee money.
Thomas *********
@Alex ****
If they are asking for more verification? It means your account is not verified. In Thailand I find it best to use their Australian customer support because it's open when we are awake.

I opened a friend's account for him last week and we transferred 700,000THB within 30secs to his Thai account. I transferred over 45,000USD to Thailand Sunday again in minutes.

You must be doing something wrong. Here's the Australian Wise Support number.

I had the same issue with Wise but worked through it after I did not see a good alternative. So you might go the painful route. Good luck

I use Bank of America. I do direct bank transfers to Kassikorn. They used to charge me a transfer fee but several years ago they stopped doing this for me for international transfers. They still charge me $30 for each US bank to US bank transfers. I don’t know why. I’m sure they get their fee somewhere in the currency conversion.

Transfers happen same day. No limits on transfer amounts.

I use a security key for verification so no phone required for transfers. However, I did give them a US phone number and US address when I set up the account so I maintain a US phone number. I’m not sure what would happen if I tried using my Thai phone and/or address.

I tried and failed to set up a Wise account last year to compare the two services.

I’ve been very happy with BofA. I had Wells Fargo when I first came to Thailand and they were awful with international transfers at the time.

Try XE

Unless you are using Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, or SCB bank, any transfer over bt50,000 will have problems, and be refused. Currently those three I listed are the only ones accepting transfers over bt50,000, unless they are SWIFT bank2bank international transfers.
Marc *********
Starling or Revolut are other options,personally I use Wise with no issues so far.

See if you can find a bank that allows Prompt Pay. I promptpay from my Singapore account to Thai account and the rates are super good.

Remitly and Xoom.....but I find Wise is more economical (VNese transfers) and never had the issue you are speaking of.

@Ken *******
thanks, it seems every time in the last 6 months I want to do a transfer they ask for more and more information. Sign up with plaid, send your license and a selfie, send proof of address. I’ve literally only sent money between my two personal accounts for 6 years with no problem until recently. And their customer service is atrocious which is my main issue
Ken ********
@Alex ****
yeah I had that issue with plaid, but it seems to all go automatically now. Good luck.
Nigel *********
Keep your transfers on wise below 50k.
Benyathip **********
@Alex ****
what about Bkk bank?
Bob **********
@Benyathip *********
you can send much more than 50k

sure can :) had a large Bkk Bank payment literally 5 minutes ago

I use capital one bank. I have no atm fees except the 220baht. If you find the right atm you can take out 30k baht at a time. I then deposit the money into my SCB account. I have been using this method for years now without issues. I’ve used this method to withdraw up to 120k baht in a day. The fee is eatable… I would use wise but they won’t let me register for some reason.
Paul *********
@Jessica ********
you'll find wise is very efficient and saves you a lot of money.

*************************************
Chris *****
Jessica you should check the rate you get. It is quite probable commission is hidden in a padded exchange rate, this approach can be quite expensive unless you've a fee free card. I would recommend persevering with Wise, their responses are quick and Wise are much more flexible than most in terms of who they'll accept.
Ivan ************
@Chris ***************
Capital One is one of the few cards with zero forex fee. Some like Schwab will even refund the 220B. It actually works out even slightly cheaper than Wise, but bit of a hassle with the cash and you can't use it for visa proof that needs international transfers.
Jessica *********
@Chris ***************
I withdrew 25k baht this week and it was $718.
Jessica *********
@Chris ***************
It’s not padded. I check I do not have international fees.
Bob **********

that’s good but it won’t work if it’s for your visa extension

i just did a transfer last week, no problems , took 6 seconds

citibank to SCB.

I use WISE to transfer 1200USD to Thai bank account. Shows up in Thai account instantly.

I have used Chase and BB NY office for transfer several time. It is domestic transfer here and automatically becomes international transfer in my BB account.

Money arrived in about one day.

once I moved to Thailand USAA closed my bank account. Didn’t send any electronic notice but sent only US mail letter saying it’s closed. No reason why and no issues before moving to Thailand. This action messed up my direct deposits for 2 months. I would suggest the source of your issues is USAA.

Wise is not the issue, the US government’s regulations are.

“Know your customer “

no US Goverment trouble with my US Bank to Bangkok Bank.

I gave up Wise for the same reason.

Now I just transfer from my bank in Norway and it's quicker than Wise.

@Alex ****
I used to send through the New York branch via ACH. But my US bank stopped allowing it because they considered it an international wire.
Benyathip **********
@Roy ********
higher cost to use your bank no? And also exchange rate worse?
Roy *********
@Benyathip *********
Not much difference and when I transfer it comes to my Bangkok Bank account faster than I get with Wise.
Bonnie *********
@Alex ****
That’s a business branch, no personal accounts.

I’ve been sending large amounts USD through Wise, no problems or delays.

@Bonnie ********
they used to allow personal transfers to go through there. I don’t know if they still do.

@Roy ********
I doubt that. I transfered last week and it took less than 3 seconds.

John *********
What amounts are you sending?
Frank **********
@Alex ****
never had a problem with USAA. Also WISE is very easy, for me at least.
Frank **********
@Alex ****
yeah I think it has to do with Federal banking regulations. The first time I used WISE it took over a week but it was for 12k USD. Now when I send about 1100-1200 USD it takes seconds. Good luck on getting everything straightened out.
John *********
@Alex ****
Anything over 49,999 baht seems to cause problems these days due to anti money laundering. I just do 49,999 a time and I use Currency fair. Wise seems to take longer to SCB. I have done over 50k successfully but it took over a week and there were additional charges.
John *********
@Alex ****
Not anymore though?
John *********
@Alex ****
I was reading on a forum the other day about it, some Bangkok Bank customers using Wise were getting these additional information requests for transfers over 50,000 baht. They were all US customers, one mentioned he sent 49,000 and it went through okay. There were other USA customers trying to help who were not having this problem. Not sure what the conclusion was and I can't remember what forum it was on, I've just had a quick look on Google with no luck, so it was probably a Facebook group.

@John ********
I send 1200 (USD) everytime. I have no idea how many transactions a year I make, no less than 20. When I need to make a big purchase or transfer I send several transactions. Sometimes 5 times in a week.

In the past year wise asked me to verify some details, I don't recall what exactly.. .Send a picture of myself and my passport or something.

Wise usually transfers 1200 in seconds, sometimes days.
Henrik ****
@John ********
, it is a Thai rule of about 50k THB. It has nothing to do with the sending bank. It is actually only the 3 biggest banks in Thailand (Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, and one more I don't remember allowed to receive more than 50k at all). If only small money, then cut it into chunks of 49,900 THB. If big money then big banks in your home country probably know better about the requirements than Wise as they are normally also considerable cheaper transferring large amounts.
John *********
@Henrik ***
I'm aware of the rules and it's not affecting me. I was trying to help the OP. I'm with SCB, I get additional charges receiving over 50k, so I just send 49,999 when I need it.
Henrik ****
@John ********
, true, the 3 Thai banks allowed for over 50k is: Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, and Siam Commercial Bank. (I just looked it up).
