Have been following posts in this group for some months. I have learned a lot from some good advice and shared experiences. As always a group is condescending or and hindsight advice commenters, but why should this group be different?
My question is, how many of you with DTV and Non O/A visa holders and have been staying long term coping with Thai language? I am asking because, I really struggle to even learn the basics. I know it is possible to get around anyway but I would like to be able to do some small talk with strangers without getting a major headache or looked at as a mentally challenged 😇🙏🏼 Would appreciate your thoughts and comments
I am studying Thai in a private school and have the Ed visa that needs to be extended every 90 days at immigration. Has anyone recently done the extension at immigration? Did the officer test you on your language skills? I am attending class and studying but worried as I am a slow learner.
I will be coming to Thailand on my 60 day visa free entry but I want to get a dtv visa and learn the Thai language is this possible and what would I need as requirements for it@
What I initially provided and why I was asked for further docs ⬇️
- Official documents from Muay Thai Fever in Chiang Mai (Expertly put together by Derry and his team at Muay Thai Fever. Very professional, excellent coaches and more importantly great people! I recommend training at your choice of gym before applying if you're able to.)
- Cover letter explaining why I’m applying, my plans for the duration of the visa, my love for Thailand, how I plan to participate in Thai society respectfully and abide by all laws and immigration rules, how I will support myself and WON’T seek employment in Thailand.
- 3 months PDF bank statements with over 500k Baht.
- Scan of my passport, previous entry and exit stamps from Thailand to show that I comply with all immigration rules (especially stay duration).
- Scan of my international drivers license.
- Certificate from Preply showing my progress of learning the Thai language for 6+ months.
- Pictures of me training and fighting in both Thailand and the UK.
- Flight out confirmation and initial hotel booking in Thailand.
- Utility bill showing my current location.
I was asked for further docs as I initially showed a pdf of my flight booking from bookingdotcom (where I booked the flight) instead of the official airline website, so make sure you get it from the airline website. You can just type in your booking reference and download your e-ticket. The only other thing I needed to provide was a letter of consent to say that I will stay in the UK until my visa has been approved.
My application went pending approval and then approved in the same afternoon. 🙏
If applying from London, give yourself at least 4 weeks before your flight to save any headaches.
Thank you to all who help in this group and good luck 🙏
If the DTV visa… under the soft powers ( I think that’s what it’s called ?) … includes studying Thai language ? Or not
I know the ED Visa is for studying Thai but wasn’t sure if the DTV is also ?
And does anyone also know if on the ED visa … wondering if it’s always in person Classes ? Or hypothetically if you wanted to be situated more rural participating in a not for profit volunteer program .. and you want to study Thai at night online will that be acceptable on ED visa .. or if it has to be in person classes.
Just curious if anyone has an personal experience with this before I then potentially try to ask a visa agent etc
For those who’ve studied Thai—how long did it take you to reach a conversational level? I know everyone learns differently, but with studying 3 times a week 2 hours, is it realistic to expect basic conversation skills?
Also if you guys have any recommendations good reputation thai language school in aonag or hua hin that offers visa ED . I'm serious about learning thai but I also want to have the proper documentation .

Hi I am 45 and just recently retired. I want to live in Thailand full time. Are my options for a visa to stay long term just an education visa where I learn Thai for a year?
Will I be able to renew this each year until I am 50?
Many people recommend the online language course called "Learn Thai from a White Guy" by Brett Whiteside.
I want to buy that onlline course, but I'd be curious to learn if anyone would recommend something to supplement it, so that I might be able to go back and forth between two. Another online course or app or YouTube channel, etc.
