TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion provides various insights into effective resources for learning Thai, including apps like Ling and courses from RTL-School in Bangkok. Many users suggest that class-based learning may be more beneficial than self-study apps alone due to the tonal nature of the Thai language. Additionally, YouTube offers numerous tutorials, and books like "Thai for Beginners" and resources from Stuart Jay Raj are highly recommended. The community encourages a combination of reading, writing, and consistent practice for better mastery.

I used Banathai's online course to get started, then accompanied that with the Thai for Beginner's book listed above (along with the app for mobile device helps a lot!!! definitely get it) as well as the audio cds for it, and then supplemented my understanding of the alphabet with a few different resources. One app is called "Write Thai" which is incredible for practicing the alphabet (Apple iOS), then "Thai Reading" (also on the App Store), another called "Thai Alphabet Chart" (iOS). I use Nemo Thai for flashcards and finally watch some helpful YouTube videos when I can. The ones by Stuart Jay Raj are great especially if you can get in to his theory work with the Indic Compass and vowel breakdown. Oh and *phew* finally now enrolled in a class in Bangkok! I love learning Thai... it's a great language which just makes a lot of sense the more it is studied!

We have been attending Thai classes through TLC which has been great for learning more about the language. It has 5 tones which we find the hardest part, especially with a Scottish accent ! It’s fun learning and even if we can manage to have some form of conversation, it is better than none! Best of luck to you

Been using Ling.

I don’t think they have Thai. Did you see this ?

Just dig in. I find a lot of falangs will talk about the tones and how they have mastered them and when you hear them speak Thai, they just speak it monotone anyway.

Thai isn't too hard to pick up at a basic level.

YouTube has plenty of resources and that is where I started.

Learn to read/write at a basic level, it really helps especially if you want something more than the usual tourist nonsense.

As mentioned earlier the book "Thai for beginners" by Benjawan Poomsan Becker is very good and they also provide an excellent English/Thai dictionary app.

Additionally Facebook, instagram and Tiktok have many many Thai language learning resources.

Reading and writing will take you a long way and improve your conversation. It looks hard, but honestly it's not that difficult once you can identify the words.

agree! Learnt reading/writing with this one. Best book if you are more the book/handwriting learner rather than video clips.

Hahaha. Thai from a white guy. Love that

I really loved starting with the alphabet which allowed me to learn to speak and hear the different sounds of the language. Thai just doesn’t translate to the Latin alphabet

Everyone’s learning approach is different, so check out a few different teachers and methods. I’m just starting and trying out Stuart Jay Raj “Cracking Thai Fundamentals.” Theres a book and also online content, can check him out on YouTube and see what you think, or at jcademy.com

Check out

in Bangkok. I was at a conversational level after 4 months there and with the base I got from them I got to fluent in a years time.

Study and practice outside of school all the time and use YouTube to learn phrases, tones and the alphabet. The more you're around the language, the easier the tones will get.

But because Thai is a tonal language, which English isn't, if you spend 90% of your time speaking and hearing English, nothing, except the basics, will stick.

my wife can help me there too. I wonder if there's a RTL in Khon Kaen. That's where we're living. I'll look it up. thaks

Rosetta stones doesn't have Thai. There are a few apps that can teach Thai that are alright, I think Ling is the most recommended.. But it seems in my personal experience these apps all fall short. Going to a class, even online is probably much better, and there not too expensive.

Rosetta Stone does have Thai, at least back when I first started to learn it. But it’s crap. They say a word in Thai and show a picture of a 🤡 , so you think the word means clown but it doesn’t. It means funny.

There in thailand? I arrive there Nov 26. My wife is fluent in English and Thai. I presume teaching language is like teaching golf, and best left to non family members!

And that really irks me. They have useless, made up languages like Klingon and High Valerian, but no Thai?
