Many people recommend the online language course called "Learn Thai from a White Guy" by Brett Whiteside.

I want to buy that onlline course, but I'd be curious to learn if anyone would recommend something to supplement it, so that I might be able to go back and forth between two. Another online course or app or YouTube channel, etc.

IMO learning from native speakers is best, and having Thai friends to practice with..

Brett Whiteside is a yank. He couldn't even speak English.

Duke Thai language school has online courses and gets good reviews, especially in regards to speaking.

I think Preply is amazing. I’m an English language tutor on the platform but they offer many languages, including Thai. These are live, one on one, 50 minute tutoring sessions. You choose your tutor based on price and curriculum.

I just did that course, good course. I did it in conjunction with the BananaThai reading and writing course

If you’re young and active you’ll pick the language up just by being there. If you’re older it becomes more difficult.

Learn from a non native, say the words wrong. People don't know what you're saying.

I speak with friends and exchange language so we all learn.

If I finished the WTFAWG course, I enrolled in Pastel Thai's Learn to Read and Write in 10 Hours (on Zoom). Those Zoom classes took me to the next level with extremely well-designed curriculum! Plus, Layla's really skilled at explaining any confusing rules for reading/writing in Thai. Highly recommend her class as the next step!

Why would one want to learn Thai from anyone that wasn't a Thai?

That's like broken telephone at the end of the circle...

🤔

Here's a prime example. NNES don't even know they've learnt wrong.

because most Thais barely speak English to explain you some language rules

not Thai language teachers. Why would I want to learn Thai from.a Thai that's not a Thai language teacher? And tbh, the first thing you learn when you are doing a course on teaching a foreign language , is that you don't translate. That inhibits effective learning. You use other methods. That's why you need qualified teachers, not just any numbskull off the street. 😜

Just like no-one should learn English from A NES who isn't an English teacher, meaning qualified.

You don't get your car fixed by anyone who is.oly owns a car. Dhuh....

I like to think I speak English better than Americans do, because I had to learn it formally as a second language when I was young. And that's why you might want to learn from someone who had to actively learn it rather than someone who just learned by osmosis.

OTOH, I definitely would not want to learn English from you ;)
