TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the implications of overstaying in Thailand, particularly focusing on a case of an 80-day overstay. Several comments provide personal accounts and humorous takes on the consequences, noting that while some individuals have managed to re-enter Thailand after significant overstays with no apparent problems, there are risks involved, especially if caught by authorities. Participants mention that a significant overstay could potentially complicate future visa applications, particularly for programs like Thailand Elite. They also recommend consulting with immigration lawyers, and some believe that once a certain threshold (like under 90 days) is reached, the risks are lower as long as individuals explain their situation to immigration officials.

get a new passport

For example I am from the UK and have a British passport. It would be possible for me to get an Irish passport as well if my father was Irish.

Unless you are fortunate enough to be able to get a passport from another country.

That's a fail :(

I personally would never overstay but at this present time many are left with no option. Good luck.

I just went to immigration because I was late and we can’t do anything right now. They wouldn’t let me in the place. They took my paperwork and before I could get comfy in my plastic chair in the sun, they gave me my passport back. “Okay, okay you go now. “

The issue is with all the lockdown restrictions it's more likely than ever that you will be caught on overstay away from the airport / border (for example at a roadblock checkpoint) and then you will be deported and blacklisted for 5 years.
it’s not ideal but some are left with no choice by that I mean people with not enough money for expensive flights when they have had multiple cancellations already

So after reading all the above comments ,i guess i,m safe to return as and when thailand opens again with my 1 day overstay stamp in my passport !......first naughty stamp in 10 trips,.(no fine).

Good luck to all those stuck in thailand at the moment ,.
The problem is NOT being on overstay here, the problem is getting caught out on something else WHILE you're on overstay <- that is what throws you off the rails.
How about googling around for visa agencies and seeing if they can get you an extension instead

Right now there is no down side to overstaying UNDER 90 days as long as you "turn yourself in" <- meaning show up at a border (once they open), an airport OR an immigration office.
The ONLY thai consulate that looks at overstay stamps is the one in Penang Malaysia and they will not sell a tourist visa to anyone with an overstay stamp.
After this cluster they will give you a free entry to a park of your choice and ฿500 out of the till

No more than 90 days you will be fine to return. Just dont get caught on the way.

A mate overstayed for about 5 yrs if not longer. He left Thailand then cameback no problem. He went to the airport with a lawyer who specialises with immigration when leaving Thailand.

You can never buy Thailand elite after doing that. Seems like the overstay stamp might cause problems for other visas in future the way things are going

You can't get a 2 month visa in somewhere like KL either
