TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the controversy of tenants being charged for not having a TM30 filed, despite the legal requirement falling on landlords or hotel owners. Participants highlight the absurdity of tenants facing fines for the landlords' negligence and express concerns regarding the legality and fairness of such practices. The conversation also touches on the broader implications of immigration law enforcement in Thailand.

I think these men were charged with everything they could possibly be charged with as they are scammers . The police did the right thing and hopefully will deport them .

I visit and stay with the he inlaws. 'We' have never filed a TM30. Although, my stays haven't exceeded 30 days.

You can book into a hotel for a night, many condos can register guests

If landlord or hotel owner fails to file TM30 in time, it’s the tenant that gets fined when they visit immigration for extension/renewal. It’s so ridiculous. Why the average tourist and tenant have to pay the fine if it’s the landlord/owners responsibility to file the TM30? No action is ever taken against the owners, so why would they go out of their way to file TM30 for you? Hence you hear stories such as this all the time.

People act like Thais don’t overstay their visas when abroad, but it happens frequently. The percentage of Thais who overstayed their US visas last year was nearly 2%. Not high, but not low either.

Yeah, but there’s probably more to the story like they’ve probably done it previously or something like that.
But as a tourist you don’t file a TM30. The hotel does.

I see so many people saying "but it's up to the property owner, not the tenant." That may be, but I know tenants who have been fined by Immigration because the TM30 hasn't been done.
It seems they attended a political event, hence the unlawful assembly charge. This probably brought attention to them. Stay out of other countries internal matters
that’s good advice. They have no business at all entering other countries politics.

Who was charged? To my knowledge, it is the obligation of the landlord to file the TM.30? If they start charging tenants / tourists, they are charging someone who cannot even technically notify her- / himself. Only in Thailand. Will this painful TM.30 ever go away?
its to do with scamming but thats nothing to do with the point about someone being charged with not having a tm 30

Hope it was a residence and not a hotel. Getting charged because your hotel didn't fill out a form would be ludicrous.

Let’s say I am renting an apartment in BKK, being legally on a retirement visa. I have visitors from back home staying couple of weeks with me. What are the registration regulations for them?
the owner of the property is legally required to register them. But realistically if they are only staying a couple weeks and won't be going to immigration for an extension, there's no need to worry about it
Yes, I can imagine. They are often quite small establishments. I’ve been staying in the provinces for ten years. Very happy to say it hasn’t been an issue for me. Yet.
This. And even it it was a residence of whatever place. It is the sole responsibility of the landlord / house / hotel owner to report by TM.30. So only this group of people should be charged. It is not even possible to report oneself as a tenant / guest - at least not without support and sensitive documents of the owner.
Yes of course but only if you own the property, as I quite clearly stated in my reply. I mean which bit of "unless you own the property" didn't you understand?
