Hi, I am on a non-B visa extension based on a work permit. I am leaving my job at the end of the month, flight out of Thailand on the 30th. Is it myself or my employer who is responsible for cancelling the work permit and visa? Do I need to ask them for a letter to take to immigration, like in the case of the student visa, or am I OK to just leave at the end of the notice period? I would like to have the option of returning on a tourist stamp in the future.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The responsibility for cancelling a Non-B visa and work permit lies primarily with the employee. Upon leaving a job, if the visa is an extension from the immigration office, the work permit must be cancelled first, and documentation from the employer should be taken to the immigration office to finalize the cancellation of the visa. This process ensures that the individual can return to Thailand in the future with a tourist stamp.

If you are on the initial 90 days of the Non-B visa you can just leave

IF you are on an extension of stay from the immigration office you need to cancel the work permit, then take that and documentation from your employer to the immigration office that issued the extension and cancel it (like with an ED visa extension)

That will "wipe the slate" and should you ever want to get another Non-Imm visa you'll be fine

How many days before can/should I do this? Is it the employer who cancels the WP? How can it be done without overstay? If I get it wrong will it bar me from entering as a tourist in the future?

% correct as usual. He gave me the same advice. I learned it the hard way. Let me share my experience.

My work permit stamp wasn't canceled officially on my passport. The immigration officer at the airport was kind enough to point out that it wasn't cancelled properly and told me to do it before I apply for another non-B with a future employer. I had to fly back to Phuket from Bangkok to get it canceled properly as I was based there then. I thought just exiting Thailand after the backend cancellation in their system would be fine. I was wrong.

Most people cancel the work permit, take the termination documentation to the immigration office about a week or so before the date and get the extension cancelled and the new stamp letting you stay until that date on the paperwork

if you get it wrong you won't have any issue FLYING out (some land borders won't let you out with an "open" uncancelled non-B extension) nor will you have issues flying back in on a tourist visa or a free stamp BUT if you don't cancel it correctly you will have issues if you ever go to get a new Non-Imm visa of any type

, the employer is not responsible for doing ANYTHING other than giving you the termination paperwork and telling you where the Ministry of Labor is so you can cancel the work permit, Most employers do cancel the work permit for you but they don't have to as it's your work permit and extension
