When changing employers, who is responsible for cancelling the current WP and visa in order to begin work with a new employer here? Is this something I am to do myself? Or the employer I am leaving must take care of this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When changing employers in Thailand, the responsibility for cancelling your current work permit (WP) and any visa extensions lies with you. As the work permit is your document, you must ensure it is cancelled properly. Your employer can assist, but it is ultimately your duty to manage the cancellation of both the work permit and any visa extension based on employment.

Leave it for the employer to do and it may get done, or may not, and suffer the consequences or do it yourself and KNOW it is done !

It's your responsibility to cancel the current work permit. Visas can not be cancelled, however extensions of stays can be cancelled. If you have an extension of stay based on employment, it is your responsibility to cancel that extension of stay.

>Or the employer I am leaving must take care of this?

Since its your document, it's your responsibility.

It is your work permit as you signed to collect it at the Ministry of Labor and the stamp to stay inside Thailand is done in your passport.

You are the one who is responsible to cancel both in the correct way

I’ve heard it is the employer who must cancel within 7 days. I wasn’t allowed to apply on my own without my employer present, I’m assuming I also cannot cancel on my own.

I can only advice, what ever you like to assume is you decision. But I never seen Work Permits handed out without a signature of the holder of the permit. Take a look in the booklet, your picture and your details are mentioned in it

I have always accompanied the employer. But when I arrived on my own, I was always told to contact the employer and have

them be present.
