What do I need to know about cancelling my work permit and visa in Thailand after resigning from my job?

Hello there, seeking some advice here. I've just resigned from my job with one month's notice and I'm planning to fly out in the end of July. They haven't cancelled my visa yet and I still have my work permit -- someone from the office says that if I don't hand in my work permit immediately, I can never get another non-b visa, is that a thing? What are some minefields I should beware of as of now?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has resigned with one month's notice and plans to leave Thailand by the end of July. They are concerned about the implications of not cancelling their work permit and visa. The discussion reveals several key points: if the user is on an extension of stay, they must cancel it; otherwise, they have no requirement to cancel the visa. It’s highlighted that the responsibility for cancelling the work permit lies with the user, and they need documentation from their employer to do so. Comments also address common misconceptions about extensions and the necessity of returning the work permit for visa cancellation.

I’m wondering what happened to your case. A close friend of mine is going through a similar issue, company doesn’t want to cooperate with the necessary documents to cancel visa. Thanks I’m advance.

Whatever will happen will be anyone's guess. One man's experience is not necessary another man's reference in this country. Rules are arbitrary.

If you gave one month notice does it mean you quit in the end of july? If yes, then your work will have to cancel your WP in the end of july as well, very simple. You can't cancel it yourself, they have to prepare all the papers and send someone from the office together with you. You could do it like a week before you fly out, then go to the immigration and apply for one week extension.

no such thing as a week extension

@Xjwhudkwhry *******
you don't need a one week extension from immigration. They'll cancel your extension the same date as the work permit then stamp you in until that date.

it depends on when your school will cancel your WP... Some are assholes and won't give you time until your flight. Why do you think that extension exists...?

@Xjwhudkwhry *******
there's no 7 day extension. You can apply for an extension when you're not entitled to one and if the immigration office accepts your application (they do not have to accept it) they will give you a 7 day "application rejected you have 7 days to leave Thailand" stamp. This is not an extension.

if it extends your stay, it's an extension ;)

@Xjwhudkwhry *******
wrong. It doesn't extend your stay. It cuts off whatever days you have left and doesn't even add to the end. And once you have the stamp you can't do anything except leave. Not even an agent can do anything with the rejection stamp. It's definitely not an extension.

They cancel work permit you cancel non B … you have to return work permit to be cancelled… then you take letter confirming cancelation to immigration and they ( immigration ) cancel your non b … as long as your work permit is cancelled you can risk flying out if within a day of work permit cancellation

Are you on your original non-B visa or are you on a 1 year extension of stay you received from immigration that says "extension of stay" on the stamp in your passport?

If you're on an extension of stay you must cancel it or you will not be able to get another long term visa extension in the future and you'll be fined 20,000 baht for failing to cancel it because you signed a paper that said you would inform immigration if anything about your application changed.

If you're on the visa only and not an extension then you cannot cancel a visa and you don't have to do anything.

So if you are on the extension you need to get documentation from your workplace that states your last day of work and take that to the labor department and cancel your work permit. Best to do it about a week in advance of the date on the paperwork.

Then once you have that done you take the same paperwork along with your cancelled work permit to the immigration office that issued your extension (also about a week ahead of time) and file to cancel your extension.

Your work permit belongs to you and it's your responsibility to cancel it. Same thing with your extension since it's in your passport.

sorry if this is a redundant question, if I fly out of the country, would my (1 yr extended) visa be automatically cancelled or do I need to run to immigration first, cancel it, then fly out?
Brandon ************
@Henrika ************
you have to do it. Even if it expires or is voided by leaving without a re-entry permit, you're still unable to get another long term extension in the future and you'll be fined 20,000 baht for failing to do so when you try.

thank you for your explanation. So here’s my situation, I’m planning to fly out on the 18th (I made a mistake on the original post), already booked a ticket two months ago as it’s a planned trip. I’m resigning on the 30th June — what’s the best course of action I should make right now if I plan to hold another job in Thailand?
Brandon ************
@Henrika ************
if you already resigned as of June 30th then you're already on overstay. If you meant you delivered the notice that you're quitting on June 30th for one month later, it's going to be difficult for you to try and cancel your extension that far in advance.

thank you. By my contract I needed to give one month notice to quit, so even though I resigned on the 30th June, my effective date the contract ends should be July 30th, right? So what should I do now?

My flight plan was to fly out in mid July and return at the beginning of August. Now this sudden change in job status is getting me really confused.

I think your situation is confusing and complicated to say the least. Maybe you should contact an agent and see if they can sort it out for you.

I'm not really sure what your options are. You can try sending a DM to

Thanks for the detailed information, I'm on my extension of the visa. So correct me if I'm wrong: I need to go to the office, get some paperwork, and take it to the labour department myself to cancel my work permit myself?

I was told to leave the work permit with the office staff, is he setting up a trap for me?
Brandon ************
@Henrika ************
ask them for paperwork stating your last day of work with the company's letterhead. Then you can decide to use that to do it yourself or trust them to let them do it. But tell them you need proof as soon as it's done.

Technically you own your work permit so you should be the one to cancel it, but you can't cancel it by yourself without documentation from the company. It's a real catch-22 when a company refuses to cooperate.

We separated on pretty bitter terms so I think I'll trust only myself to cancel it I guess. Can I cancel it at any labour office, or must I go to the labour office I got my work permit to cancel it?

this is pretty detailed! Thank you for the info, do you mind sharing where did you get the info? I plan to research some more.
