What happens if I leave Thailand without cancelling my Non-B visa and work permit?

I put a previous post about cancelling my visa and work permit, my work have told me that they can cancel the work permit but there may not be enough time to cancel the visa (Non-B) in time (I fly back to UK on 21st) … as they said the signature for the letter may not be able to be done in time…

Anyway, has anyone got experience of not being able to cancel a long term visa and just leaving with an exit stamp?

And would doing this make future visa applications impossible or is it easy enough to get around if you have evidence (my employer agreeing to the cancellation etc…) has anyone had experience of trying to get a new long term visa after this?

Please let me know asap!

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you leave Thailand without formally cancelling your Non-B visa, you are not likely to face significant issues re-entering the country. However, you could encounter difficulties obtaining a new long-term visa in the future. It is essential to cancel your visa as soon as your work permit is cancelled to avoid fines, which can accumulate daily until the cancellation is processed. Although not cancelling may not be classified as an overstay, it can lead to fines for not following the rules properly.

you can certainly leave without canceling your extension and you can certainly get back IN without any issues with the uncancelled extension in your passport but you aren't gonna get a new long term visa or extension inside the country without cancelling it and you're going to end up paying a fine (no matter whose fault you say it is) because you didn't cancel the extension the day the work permit was cancelled. <- they'll charge you 500 baht a day up to the max 20K baht fine for every day the extension wasn't cancelled after the work permit was..

It's not an overstay, it's not anything but a "you didn't follow the rules correctly" fine and won't affect anything OTHER than until you actually cancel that extension you can't get a new in country visa or long term extension

but are you saying that if that extension stamp went past it’s expiry date (for me next April) or I cancelled it later then I would still pay a fine, but that after the stamp had been cancelled or expired and fine payed, then a new long term stamp would be possible?

bottom line...if you want to get another visa inside Thailand. .. Don't leave Thailand WITHOUT cancelling your current extension of stay.

I believe that the OP has the answers to his Post....

Although he may not agree with them, the advice given by Moderators

and

is CORRECT.

right, you WILL be fined for not following the rules and cancelling that extension when you cancelled the work permit (y)

AND once you pay that fine and get the stamp in your passport saying that old extension is officially cancelled you will have no issues getting a Non-Immigrant visa/extension

if that extension of stay expires because I’m not in the country then what happens?

@Alex *****
you will still NOT be able to get a Non-Immgrant type visa or an extension on one until you get that extension cancelled, Just because one expires or that you stamp out of the country and it runs out doesn't officially cancel it. You WILL be fined from the date they cancelled the work permit until you cancel the extension at 500baht a day and it caps out after 40 days at 20K baht

also, if he can’t get the paperwork, can’t he just go into immigration one day after his extension expires, pay the 500 baht fine for overstay, the 500 baht fine for not canceling his extension (1 day) and then leave the country?

isn’t his extension automatically cancelled when the school cancels his work permit?
Ellie *******
@Ryan *******
, No, an extension is not canceled automatically when wp is canceled. And no, it wouldn't work like that. If he cannot get the letter, he might need additional documents to cancel it officially, no matter it's before or after the extension expiry. And for him to be able to apply for an extension (even for not-approval-7-days stamp) inside Thailand, he needs to cancel his previous extension.

@Ellie ******
so if someone gets a work permit and one year extension, and then stop showing up to work, the extension isn’t canceled even if the school fires the teacher and cancels the work permit?
Ellie *******
@Ryan *******
, even gets fired, or past the date of 1-year extension is expired, wouldn't be "automatically" canceled officially.

@Ellie ******
so if he can’t get that letter, he can never again get a visa extension in Thailand?
Ellie *******
@Ryan *******
, If you cannot get the letter, basically he cannot cancel his extension. But there may be other ways to cancel an extension, such as by providing other official supporting documents (types vary for offices), etc.

is my above reply to Ryan more or less correct? 🙂

, You may need to pay for fine to cancel, then you will be able to apply for another long-term visa. This part is correct. But this does not mean that you can cancel the previous extension by just paying a fine without the necessary documents always.

’ message below, you have to pay the fine and follow the procedure of officially cancelling the previous extension and this won’t stop you from getting another long term visa in future.

I guess they understand that maybe sometimes you can’t cancel the Visa so as long as you pay the fine etc.. (which you have to pay no matter what that’s just how it is, the foreigner incurs the fines/costs) then you are able to get another long term visa.
