Hi. Just need some advice. My employer doesn't want to cancel my work permit and visa (1yr extension) anytime soon. However, I want it to be properly cancelled so I won't have any problems when I find a new job here.

Should I just leave my work permit with them and let them send me a photo of the cancellation receipt once available?

I live in the province (12 hrs from bkk) and it would take an hour to visit the nearest immigration and labor office, so I can't go there without them. But I need to go to Bangkok this week already.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual seeks advice on how to properly cancel their work permit and visa in Thailand, particularly as their employer is unwilling to assist. Community members recommend obtaining an employment cancellation letter from the employer to facilitate self-cancellation of the work permit at the labor office. There are also warnings about the necessity of cancelling the NON-B visa subsequently.

And on that final note we're done. How about you head on over to the minstry of labour where you got the work permit with your termination paperwork from your employer and find out for yourself whether you can or can't cancel a work permit on your own.

Sadly your post isn't all that thai visa related sorry :/

Why would you leave a work permit (that is in YOUR name and is YOUR work permit) with your employer?

It is NOT your employers responsibility to cancel the work permit OR the yearly extension in your passport it is YOURS :O

You need to do it or you most certainly will have problems if you ever do want to work here in thailand again.

Good Luck (y)

Thanks for the advice. However, I'm confused as I've been told numerous times that my employer has to be the one to cancel the WP and extension as this is the new rule since a few years ago?

You need an employment cancellation letter from your employer. If you can at least get that off them, you can go to the labour office and cancel the WP yourself. Be aware though, as soon as you do thst, you must go to immigration and cancel your Non B visa and they'll give you 24 hours to get out of Thailand.
