Do I need to cancel my Non-B Visa before leaving Thailand?

Hi. I'm on Non-B Visa and work permit, but I'm moving to another country in about a week. My question is - do I need to go to Immigration office and cancel the Non-B Visa? Or can I just fly out from Suvarnabhumi airport and that's it?

I heard somewhere they might not let you out of the country if you haven't cancelled the Non-B Visa, which sounds weird but I'd rather check. The company I'm working for here said they'll cancel the work permit after I leave.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are moving to another country and hold a Non-B Visa with a work permit in Thailand, you do not necessarily need to cancel your Non-B Visa before departing. You can leave Thailand without issue from the airport, provided you are aware that this may affect your ability to obtain a new visa or work permit in the future should you wish to return. However, it is advisable to obtain a cancellation letter for your work permit to avoid any complications later, especially if you might return to Thailand and seek employment.

and this is why it's so important to LOOK at your stamps.

if we had known whether the O/P was on the original 90 day stamp they got when they received their Non-B VISA or if they were on an "extension of stay" they got AFTER that 90 days ran down we'd have gotten them the answer much faster :/

Correct terminology is critical in getting correct answers to questions..

Hi Tod. It's a 1 year extension of stay valid till June 2022. I didn't know there was much difference in terminology there

What that means
@An**
is that you have to GO to the immigration office and cancel it and your work permit before you leave the country :O <- if you're ever gonna come back and work here again.

Otherwise it can cause you problems.

Thanks, got it. For work permit - do I cancel it at Immigration too or at the Ministry of Labour (not sure if that's what it's called)? My WP is regular, not BOI

You need a letter of WP cancellation. I tried to leave overland once and was refused. The airport may be different but it could be an issue.

You need to cancel both a work permit AND an extension if you may come back to Thailand and apply for a long-term visa/extension. Especially based on working.

You wouldn't get any trouble when you leave Thailand from the airport without canceling the current extension and work permit.

You would face problems when you apply for new ones in your future, not when you leave Thailand.

spot on, even though some say otherwise. Leaving is easy, your next visa (of any kind!) would be the source of your headaches, unless you close up the loop as stated above.

A school failed to close a few of our Ed visas that ended perfectly legitimately a while back. We (some students) ran into all sorts of issues later on. Took a while to figure out the root cause of the problem.

You can not cancel a visa, so that sorts that out.

We see this question often...

It's your work permit...

If you see any chance you are returning to Thailand and seeking employment...

I suggest you get the letter to the Thai immigration office that your employment will end on xxx date...

Cancel your work permit with the Labor Ministry...and Thai immigration.

Then be free to leave Thailand...

I will ask
@Tod ********
to confirm this... As I believe he is expert on this subject.

Safe travels.

Thank you! I was told by my company that they can only apply for that letter from Immigration 21 days in advance and not later. But I am leaving in about 10 days. Would it be ok to get a letter stating a later date as my end of employment and just leave earlier?
Ellie *******
@Anna **********
the letter can state the last date before your contraction.

Also I don't think I'd be returning to Thailand and seeking employment again, but well you never know... Will not getting that letter from Immigration ruin my chance at getting a Non-B and work permit again if I ever decide I want to?

@Anna **********
very possibly.

Did you apply for an extension based on employment or are you still on the first 90days from Non-B visa?
