EDIT: AXA will not cover me as I am type one diabetic - can anyone reccomend a different insurer?

Sorry me again - Hi all. I’m flying from the uk to Thailand 28th December for 30 days but will be extending it another 30 days. Should I get insurance for 60 days now? Or 30? Like if I’m asked why I have insurance for 2 months but my onward flight is in a month (a cheap one that won’t be used) will it be ok? Is it okay to say that you plan on extending your visa to authorities for example?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses travel insurance options for a UK expat traveling to Thailand for 30 days, with the intention to extend the stay. The user asks whether to purchase a 30-day insurance policy or a 60-day one, considering potential questioning from authorities about their travel plans. The conversation includes recommendations for different insurers, inquiries about extending insurance while in Thailand, and personal accounts of difficulties encountered with specific insurance providers, particularly in relation to pre-existing conditions like diabetes and asthma.

Try reapplying for AXA without giving any preexisting conditions.

Buy 60 days to cover your whole trip now.

Don't buy an onward flight until airline asks at check in, then cancel it when you're waiting to board.

Have a wonderful trip.

I would gladly recommend insurers but this forum blocks the naming of agents as the forum sells insurance. Its unfortunate as experienced agents can and do provide fine helpful services vs an online link to an affiliate insurance website which offers no service.

@Ja***
Who sells insurance here? There's one agent (RJ) who contented to spread false information (like health insurance was required for every visa) in an attempt to sell unnecessary insurance to people. He was blocked and his services are not allowed to be advertised here. That's it.

@Garrett **********
my apologies. I confused your forum to others which do hold affiliate insurance aggreements with insurers to market their insurance.

My aim is and has been to recommend insurance which does meet the entry and stay requirements of Thai visas and now the Thailand Pass too.

Most concerned about insurers which do not cover the costs of COVID hospital bills if one tests positive without symptoms.

That is why I have recommended insurance that do and experienced agents to provide it.

The issue of just how much insurance is needed is sadly not with one answer.

As Thai Embassy's and Consulates around the world have applied different rules to go by (some their own) to obtain the various visas and CoE.

Now with the Thailand Pass the answer yet remains unclear.

I respectfully disagree with your assertion re RJ...as I found him most able and helpful with his customers. Even going out of his way to assist others in need when an expat were with problems with their insurer and with claim difficulties they were having. He is a top notch pro IMHO.

Since this COVID scene erupted early last year experienced insurance agents have been available to guide expats ...and thankfully are still here today among us helping.

But. their being blocked from forum participation leaves them unable to reply to members questions and needs.

We are still in doubt of the changing COVID situation and what comes next. Indeed I hope and pray Thailand may be able to continue to reopen. 🙏🙏🙏

@Ja***
"I respectfully disagree with your assertion re RJ" I wasn't making an assertion, I'm stating the reason why he was removed from this group. It happened multiple times, I messaged him about it, and he continued to do so. Furthermore, you don't PM members here to solicit services, 1 of the 2 group rules. He continues to do it here either through fake profiles or from referrals from others here.

This is not a group to ask a question in and be bombarded with solicitations from agents and people selling you things. This group is an UNBIASED platform to ask questions and get advice from, absent of the concern that someone is giving you advice with the intention misleading you to sell something.

@James *******
we dont sell insurance, and you are welcome to recomend who you wish. But this is not a sales platform for them to get names and start sending them messages etc. We have no financial interest in anything but get many complaints from people when they have problems with insurance agents and lately agents doing Thaipass and evisas, asking how to get my money back they havent got my Thai pass in time.

Let people be free to contact agents as they wish.

@Michael *******
thank you. Its good helpful information to know. Thank You.

If you are in UK try Barclays Bank Travel Insurance. (May need to open current account with £20 to qualify) Then £18.50 per month. Cover for diabetes for small extra fee and extend cover past 31 days. It is multi trip cover but you can get out after 6 months.

Get access to airport lounges and if a car owner rac cover all inclusive.

I've got insurance through my flight with Emirates, all included.....I'm hoping it ticks all the boxes 😒

@Joanne *****
if its with a return ticket...you are fine... Just know that it no longer covers all the hospital expenses if you test positive for COVID. It now is limited to US $150. per day for max of 14 hospital days = $2,100 max of the approx $5,000 hospital bill if no symptoms...more with symptoms.
Joanne ******
@James *******
Thanks for the info!yes it is a return ticket.

@Joanne *****
you are covered to the limits of the Emirates AIG Travel Guard policy.

I tried to get Axa yesterday, but because I have asthma, the online aplication said I can’t get it. Sent pm them via Facebook and they kindly replied and it’s probably going to be ok. Waiting their department to contact me. If I got it right, they just wont cover anything to do with my asthma. Could it be the same issue with you?

I looked at AXA their signup page questions left me with impression they would resist payouts using every sleazy trick in the book, have a look at

Its not obligatory to have insurance to get the extension.

As long as it covers the 30 days it doesnt matter, some people have a years policy.
Michael ********
@James *******
ok this was the interview with Director general of the ministry of affairs where he tells Richard Barrow that 30 days of insurance is all that is required, of course in typical Thai Fashion that information cannot be found on any goverment website.
James ********
@Michael *******
yes I read that with great hopes...but it is not true. Sadly. BTW I thought that was what you were basing your claim on...I was too wishing it was true.
Michael ********
@James *******
there are people who have commented here that they have long term visas and just submitted a 30 day insurance and have been approved for the Thai pass
James ********
@Michael *******
I am anxious to read posts if their getting the Thailand Pass with only one month insurance and that they have been stamped in longer than one month upon arrival.
Garrett ***********
@Ja***
Happens everyday, I don't know a single person that actually had to buy a years policy for the Thaipass. Unfortunately, when you're in the business of selling insurance or getting your advice from insurance agents, the information can be misleading.
Michael ********
@James *******
There was a couple of answers in posts here but cannot find, probably got to go Singapore at new year for a few days so i can try personally.
James ********
@Michael *******
so you are saying that if I have a tourist visa I am only required to show proof of 30 days insurance? Even though I am stamped in for 60 days on arrival.

What if I have a new Non O visa for marriage to Thai?

Or new Non O as retiree?

Or new Non O as father of Thai child?

Or STV visa?

Or OA visa retirement?

Or Ed Visa to study at University?

To name a few ...

How many month(s) of insurance does one need to show proof for to get the visa and Thailand Pass ?

Thats a big question.

Also is it possible to extend insurance when in Thailand - for example if we are able to do the covid extension. Can we just buy a new policy? I’m on AXA now and it says you must not be in Thailand so was just wondering how you would insure yourself if you end up staying longer?
Wayne *********
@Jodie *****
I booked insurance for 3 months but only staying 2 they didn't question it

there also are new policies which can be written while you are in Thailand. Ask agents on other forums ..they will gladly help you.
James ********
@Jodie *****
ask your AXA agent...it can be extended inside Thailand.
Colin ********
@Jodie *****
Barclays also provide a specific page made for the Thai authorities covering covid cover.
Daniella **********
@Jodie *****
you can’t extend with AXA once you’re in Thailand so you have to buy the 60 days prior to arriving! Think they expect you to predict your length of stay prior to arriving! I’m going for Atleast 60 but might extend so bought the 90 day one to be sure!
Daniella **********
I’m sorted myself because of the advice I was given when I spoke to AXA so was only going off of the information I was told 🤷🏻‍♀️
Daniella **********
I asked them this question and they told me they couldn’t?
