What travel insurance do I need for a Special Tourist Visa to Thailand, especially regarding COVID coverage?

Hey all, I have a question about the travel insurance.

I'm planning on going to Thailand for 3-6 months this winter. I was considering applying for the Special Tourist Visa. (If anyone has another suggestion I'd be open to it.) However the one thing I'm a little confused about is the Travel Insurance. I have insurance in the US but I'm guessing this does not qualify, and I will have to purchase specific travel insurance, and the Insurance must specifically cover COVID? Does anyone have any services that they could recommend to cover this base?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around travel insurance requirements for those planning to visit Thailand on a Special Tourist Visa for 3-6 months. Key points highlight that insurance must be from a Thai company and specifically cover COVID-19. Recommendations include AXA Sawasdee Thailand and Luma for their appropriate coverage and extensions. There are concerns about non-responsive policies, as highlighted by experiences shared regarding false positives in COVID tests not being covered. Some users mention that travel insurance included with airline tickets may not meet visa requirements.

I used Insubuy, under $100 for 90 days

TR 60 + 30, and then if they keep extending the covid extensions those are 60 a pop....the STV visa is a mess

Axa Sawatdee, because they cover non symptomatic covid mandatory hospitalisations/quarantine. You can only extend to 180 days if you buy 90, so go for the upper limit of what you think.

COVID is covered over 100,000 USD.

Inpatient/outpatient unlimited.

However, quarantine is not covered.

There's no mention that the insurance company must be Thai. Would also be a surprising precedent 🤔

I don’t know if it’s acceptable to the Thai government but I just flew to Indonesia with Emirates and was given travel insurance including covid cover free ( inclusive) with my ticket. Valid for duration of trip. Worth checking out.

people have used emirates successfully for COE on tourist visa... I don't think it meet the requirements for stv though.

My Thai girlfriend knows farangs who did test (false?) positive during their quarantine, end up in hospital and their 100.000USD COVID covering insurance (from the Tokio Marine Group) did not pay at all, so they had to stay in the hospital at their own expense (at +-€1000/day for 14 days). On the official website of the Thai Embassy they recommend AXA Sawasdee Thailand. So to avoid problems, just take that one. I did took that one myself also.

yep that Tokio Marine policy bought in Insubuy website does not pay for hospital bills if you tested positive for COVID without symptoms. Sadly there are 3 expats which found that out after they tested COVID positive without symptoms.

AXA does allow you to extend your insurance once for 90 days. So if you are planning on staying the 270 days, best to buy all up front instead of only 90 days.

Luma does extentions without restrictions.

The STV requires Thai insurance company. Axa or Luma. Axa is cheaper.

the Thai Embassy doesn't mention that you need a *Thai* insurance. Where did you read that?

the STV visa requirements includes dual insurance requirements.

@James *******
by dual you mean some for medical expenses and some for quarantine expenses?

I am a former stv... You can double check with embassy directly.

I did know one person that did get in and renewed using safety wing from Europe.. But they were in province for extention and immagration allowed it.

In Bangkok they would not allow extention without Thai insurance per the immagration officer that did my extension.

I recommend it either way, as most nonthai insurance companies will no pay for asymptotiatic hospital stay required by Thai government if you test positive. Many foreigner left with big hospital bills their insurance won't pay. Thai insurance will cover it.

thanks for the info.

Do you know why false-positive patients aren't released after a subsequent negative test? Do they have to stay in hospital for the whole time anyway?
James ********
@Marc ******
if you test positive for COVID with or without symptoms you are placed in the hospital at your expense for 14 days

@Marc ******
I have never heard of a "false positive".. Just because you test positive once, you have minimum 2 week hospital and need 2 negative results and then 2 weeks home surveillance. I don't agree with it, but those are rules.

ah I think I've read that somewhere else. Also good to know, thank you.
