TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discusses various travel insurance options available for expats currently in Thailand who want to extend their stay but cannot renew their existing insurance. Recommendations include SafetyWing, Big Cat Travel Insurance, AXA, and Atlas Travel Medical Insurance. A few users share personal experiences with different insurance companies and highlight the importance of having coverage for unexpected medical emergencies while abroad.

ststing wh you are from would help. Some companies only work with certain countries so recommending a company in Canada might not work if you are from Australia. Many insurance companies will allow you to buy while already on holiday but impose a 48 hour waiting period. Read the wordings for companies that insure people from where you are from and see. Safety Wing deals with the majority of countries but the limit is low, worth checking out.

I am very surprised by most of the answers. In Europe, travel insurance usually requires a primary residence in the country of insurance. Annual contracts are also limited to a maximum number of days per trip. I also receive (normally required, probably rarely checked) written confirmation from my insurance company the coverage for the respective travel destination as well as the duration of the trip.Maybe there is a loophole, but is it regular?????

Yes and no for Europe. Annual contracts are indeed only intended for short term trips (usually between 30-90 days each) - that is why those contracts are dirt cheap. But then there are contracts for longer trips (up to a year / or up to five years). Yes, for those contracts one needs to have a residence in that country - but not during the whole time, but only at the time of signing the contract. With my German insurance for example, I can even have that contract for the maximum time possible, and they will refund me the difference should I return early. Thus I always make use of that and have that contract run much longer than I intend to travel. And the best part (sorry US guys): Unlimitted coverage for as low as around 50 Euro or about 2,000 THB a month. Highly recommended, should you live in Germany:

Call AA insure in Pattaya. Dutch very reliable company. They can help you out but many other insurance companies can help you out too. And maybe you can buy insurance in your own country via email

I use these for my bike insurance and they put me on to these for my health insurance.

All these comments about people’s travel insurance paying out. But not one person says which company they use. Really helpful guys.

HM needs to be signed before departure and can't be extended abroad, unfortunately. Mawista allows both.

You should use a reputable travel health insurance from your home country. Why? Because it is much easier / more familiar to enforce it should you ever need to. I feel sorry for people from the US needing to pay rediciulous rates for such insurances. But as a EU / German citizen, I get unlimitted health insurance abroad for up to 5 years for as low as 50 EUR / 2,000 THB / month. This one, I can highly recommend if having a residence in Germany at the time of signing:

AXA was good for me. Paid my claim. Affordable at the time. Be careful with them all and read the fine print just in case.

That Heath person seems to have blocked me for pointing out his comments were contradictory. He maxed out his credit card when 2 insurers refused his claims ( usually that's due to failed declaration error or because of an exclusion). Leaving him to pay. That's basically same situation as having no insurance. . 🤦
Andy **********
Who cares?
Lynnette *******
@Andy *********
think he said previously on another thread it was something to do with an existing health issue. 2 different insurers refused his claims. Either way, as he pointed out, with it resulting in no cover he had to max out his credit cards. Which is what will happen if people don't have cover to begin with.
Andy **********
@Lynnette ******
He's not shared why the claims were refused. Hospitalized twice on holiday? Either unlucky, on the sauce all the time or just making things up to get noticed.

We buy the annual allianz plan. I have renewed it abroad several times.

SafetyWing allows you to buy while already abroad - there is better / cheaper options before traveling, but few that allow signing up while already traveling:

at minimum buy catastrophic insurance with deductible to avoid using your life savings. I had the same issue when I extended my trip.

I extended with atlas travel medical insurance (I think they had the travel expense coverage as well )

apparently some people think you can quickly save up enough to cover all possible eventualities. The reality is, most people can't. Setting aside the approx £200 single trip or £400 a year travel insurance in a savings account would not be enough to cover missed flights, accidents/ illness/ hospitalisation.
Frank-Steven ***********
And don't listen to people sugegsting to not be needing any health insurance. Yes, simple tratments are rather cheap in Thailand. But should you have a major exident, the bills could ruin you - or you would have to settle with less then the best treatment ... and who wants that?
John ***********
Travel insurance is becoming as costly as air travel. Probably a necessary evil but I can understand why people travelling for long periods are reluctant to pay the high premiums.
Tony **********
Rates are driven by your declaration of the cost of the trip. I used $500 and full medical, accident, list luggage and delay insurance so remained the same. It was for 1 month and cost $76usd. If it's used $2000, the cost would have been $260usd.

I buy travel insurance for the medical and evacuation. List luggage is a plus.

It's a scam in Thailand.

Thai Dr's and Hospitals are quite reasonable, as are prescription drugs.

The Insurance Cos lie like hell, and charge Western rates, while ( if ever needed ), they negotiate Thai rates with the Hospitals.

I'm 74, insurance can be costly for us. But it's important to have. Just got to be sure we fill in the forms properly. 🙄
John ***********
@Lynnette ******
I paid $A500 for a 30 day trip last year and have opted for cheaper insurance with the same coverage this year for $350 (which included removing the excess). $500 Australian for a month is a lot of money. I am 70 so no insurance is not an option. The cheaper policy will almost certainly not be as easy to claim on, but the policy I had last year is now $570, and I am not prepared to pay so much again.
Lynnette *******
@John **********
I paid less than £200 for cover and I've got pre existing conditions. Last time I claimed it was for a full refund on my £2000 flight cost because I was unable to travel ( broke my leg).

Big Cat Travel Insurance in the UK will allow you to extend. Not sure where you are from. I am currently watching a YouTuber stuck in a Bangkok hospital needs taking home will cost potentially over £100,000. I know friends in Goa who had no cover cost them £

to fly home with a nurse on oxygen from Goa. I needed £

treatment in South Africa. Try to extend if you can.

After my experience with insurances would not buy any. Put the same amount of money in a separate account. Insurance companies make money by taking money not paying money. I'm sure some insurance seller clown will act like a real person now and say how great insurance is? 😄

@Nongnuch *******
What company you use?

@Lynnette ******
Which company do you use?

@Lynnette ******
If I would of saved the money instead of buying insurance I would not of needed the credit cards. I hope your insurance business is doing well but I'm not buying it .
Lynnette *******
@Heath **********
you say 2 insurers didn't pay out, that suggests there was an issue with your claim. Could be you weren't adequately covered, hadn't declared something, etc. You also say it left you having to pay using your credit card because you were effectively "without insurance", and that's what you're advising people to do! To have no insurance. Lol.

@Pascal *******
Yes. Travel insurance paid nothing.

@Nongnuch *******
good for you. You ever think maybe all stories not the same? I hope your insurance sales do well? 😃
Lynnette *******
@Heath **********
you're not just telling your story, you're advising people not to get insurance and max out their credit cards, like you did when your insurance failed.
Nongnuch ********
@Heath **********
well, if your words were true, I would have lost 60.000.- Euro after I got hospitalized in Thailand with a lung emphysema in 2019. Only REALLY stupid people plan a holiday trip without a proper insurance. I was VERY lucky my travel insurance paid for ALL the costs
Heath ***********
@Lynnette ******
I had 2 different companies that didn't pay up. Maxed out my credit cards paying for hospital stay. You do what you want i just telling my story 😌 If I would of just saved the money I spent on insurance I would of been better off.
Lynnette *******
@Heath **********
Not sure what insurance company you had that didn't pay up. So long as you've declared pre-existing conditions, not engaged in excluded activities, our family have never had an issue with a claim. Many deal direct with the hospitals so that's even better. If having no insurance was such a success why do you think there are so many go-fund-me appeals for money to help uninsured injured people?
Heath ***********
@Lynnette ******
Better to have some money than insurance that pays nothing.
Lynnette *******
@Heath **********
that may not work for people who are travelling now and won't have saved up enough NOW. Especially if they get sick, injured, have passports stolen, miss flights in the coming weeks.
