What should my husband do after incorrectly entering Thailand with a new passport and receiving a 30-day exemption instead of recognizing his Non-O retirement visa?

My husband has a non o retirement visa with a reentry permit. He traveled to French Polynesia where he renewed his French passport and he just came back to Thailand with the new passport. But he did not show the old passeport with the non o visa stamp. Instead he showed the new passport and was stamped a 30 days exemption. What are the consecuences and what should he do now ? His non O visa should be renewed next month

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is facing a potential problem after their husband returned to Thailand with a new French passport, failing to present his old passport containing a valid Non-O retirement visa. He was granted a 30-day exemption instead. Respondents in the comments generally advise that he should consult with the local immigration office to rectify the situation. It's suggested that he may need to process a new Non-O visa application and emphasize the importance of having both passports for any immigration-related matters. The old passport, which is invalidated but still contains valid Thai stamps, can potentially be transferred to the new passport if handled properly at immigration.

Old Passport has finished

with all stamps also.

As he did not go to Immigration

to transfer the old stamps

before leaving the country he

has only the new existing

passport where he got the

30 day stamp. So he must

start the new procedere.

he renewed his passport AFTER he left Thailand. His mistake is not having showed the old passeport with the visa stamp when he came back to Thailand. Anyway the problem is solved. 😍 I made a new post with an update, here is the link.

Why didn't he renew his passport in Thailand?

he spent 6 months in French Polynesia so it was easier for him to renew his passport while being on his island rather than going to the French embassy in Bangkok

Had the same problem years ago. Immigration told me to start a new process for non O retirement visa.

Best thing to do us ask at your local immigration office where i assume your non o was issued. Logically, your re entry permit is still valid in your old passport and you say it has space. If you left Thailand and re entered on your old passport presumably you would re enter under your non o. The system might have registered your new passport which would complicate things but as someone said you are not trying to do anything that is not above board. If you do re enter on the non o using the re entry permit it could possibly be easier to sort out the 30 day Visa exempt issue with your immigration office. Failing all that apply for another 90 day non o as soon as possible. Presumably you have all in place to re new your original non o so would not have a problem getting the 12 month extension at the right time. Ask at your office and make sure you apologise profusely for your mistake. Good luck.

Immigration office will give the correct answer. 1. Immigration needs to transfer the Non-O stamp to the new passport. 2. They may ask him to leave Thailand and come back on the correct stamp. Or 3. They can correct it all at the office.

I wouldn’t stress too much. Just speak with them and hopefully can fix it without leaving the country. Let us know what they say. Best of luck!

I will be returning with a new passport,I will have my old passport with my 1 yr extended visa plus re-entry stamp. It’s my understanding that I need to show both passports and ask the Immigration officer to enter the visa info into my new passport at his desk. Can anyone confirm this .Much appreciated

He should go to immigration and explain his situation. He hasn't done anything wrong, just showed the wrong passport.

your husband should have kept the old passport after having been issued a new passport. The visa or stay permit stamps in an old passport will remain valid. You can transfer a stay permit from your old passport to a new passport on Thai Immigration. . . . However you must ask your passport issueing authority to hand over to you the "invalidated" old passport, which is containing still valid Thai stamps

he kept his old passport. And that is the reason of the confusion Read my comment above ☺️🥰 thank you for your advice

If he did not have a re-entry permit for his Non-O, it is over now. Will have to start that process over i believe

Why on earth did he not show he's visa? That's weird asf

when he left Tahiti he showed the old passport. (Still valid for 2 years but the Thai immigration asked him to renew it because not enough pages left ) in French Polynesia he was retained by the customs who saw in their system that he was registered under another passport. After a time that seemed very long, they told him not to show anymore his old passport ever. My husband is 80 years old and not stupid at all ( thanks for the nice opinion ) but just confused with his 2 passports and stressed by the incident. I wish everybody could at this age make alone such a long and exhausting journey between his 2 homes. 3 days traveling, 5 airports + spending 22 hours in Taipei airport waiting for a connecting flight. Who never makes a weird mistake ? Please be indulgent. But I agree it is a stupid mishap.

I will let you know what will happen next

that's sadly how the bureaucracy of different nations can mess you around. Sadly it will likely cost him all the fuss of going back and starting all over again. I wish you both luck.

alright Michael, that's the ladies husband, and probably someone's dad, so think if you could possibly not be such a prick, especially when not offering any help. And let's hope people aren't so mean when you get a little older and make mistakes. It's nice to be nice. Try it 🙏🏻

I wouldn't want to judge the person being stupid as I don't know him but this is definitely a stupid mishap. No doubt about that

Better go to his immigration office to get their take, but as he's now legally in the country on 30-day exempt, I'd say he'd have to start the non-O from scratch. Surprised he didn't say anything at the airport when he entered
