Can you apply for a Thai tourist visa at the embassy with both old and new passports?

Has anyone recently traveled with an old and new passport in hand to Kualar Lumpur?

My husband had to recently get a new Australian passport as his old one had a bad stamp from some dodgy school that cropped up during the Covid years.

On the 31st of March [Friday just gone] my husband left Thailand on an old passport that expires today [April 2nd] and he was hoping that the Thai Embassy in Kl would put the tourist visa stamp into his new passport [especially considering that the old one is now non-usable as of today].

So, my husband left Thailand on the old passport and then entered Malaysia on the old passport and is now concerned that at the Thai Embassy in Kl that they will think it strange that he has a brand-new passport when his old passport still had two years validity on it and a few spare pages left.

Has anyone recently been through this experience at the KL Thai embassy?

Any feedback would be helpful. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user seeks advice on a challenge faced by their husband, who recently acquired a new Australian passport due to issues with his old passport, which still had validity. He entered Malaysia on his old passport and now wants to obtain a tourist visa for Thailand at the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, worried that presenting both passports might raise questions. Comments reveal mixed experiences regarding visa issuance in such cases, with one user confirming refusal of a visa stamp in the new passport while others discuss complexities arising from visa exemptions and extensions.

Why can’t he reenter Thailand visa exempt and sort out his tourist visa here?

But you state above that ‘they refused to put the tourist visa stamp…’. A tourist visa is 60 days and visa exempt (with a further extension) gives you 60 days total as well…

yeah they refused to do that. there is no visa exempt, just a toursit visa in an expired passport. it is being amended but it just means further stay and hassle in KL.

On a visa exempt i do not think you can extend within thailand to another visa as you technically have no visa. It is for people that are coming in for a short trip, like a tourist.

They bloody refused to put the tourist visa stamp into his new passport for some reason. Now he cannot get his flight back as he has to faff around getting supporting documents from various departments, just so he can come back to Thailand!

They’ll probably ask for both passports to check the history

I think so and then hopefully put the tourist visa into the new one.

Australia doesn't punch holes or cut off the corner of the cover of an old passport when they issue someone a new one?

They will most likely cut the old one at the embassy. it is best to keep them in my opinion. I am try to get my french passport and it is a little harder without an old one to show them.'

There may well not be a problem with the passports and hopefully they put the visa in the new passport which makes the old one obsolete anyway. i think he was worried about it because other things have been so hard.

they may well do this at the embassy. Once you receive a new passport from Australia via the post, they also include a letter informing you how long you have to travel on the now old passport. They give you 30 days exactly.

Understood.

I'm not Australian so I have no idea of your passport renewal system.

Good luck with everything.

All the best,

Cheers

Sounds like a 2nd passport rather than a replacement passport

I got a new passport through Bangkok Embassy and was not required to send in or produce old passport, so it is possible to have (at face value) two valid passports. However, the Australian Passport Office did inform me the old one was cancelled and could not be used

I'm a bit confused by this scenario...

. They cut off the data strip on the main page. So it's beyond me how he left on the cancelled and destroyed old passport..

The passport was still valid when he left Thailand. He received his new pssport via the post and that is why it includes a letter telling you that you only have 30 days validity left on the old one. Sorry if my post did not make sense. I think I was stressed when writing it, but hopefully all will be ok.
