Following situation. My friend, french citizen living in Bangkok and Shanghai, has a retirement extension ( with re entry permit ) He just got his new passport from the French consulate in Shanghai, tough his old one with the extension inside was invalidated. He has the letter from the embassy but it is in Chinese. He has a stamp in the passport stating that this passport replaces the previous one, but it is in French. Any advice?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A French citizen residing in Bangkok and Shanghai faces issues with his retirement extension after obtaining a new passport in China. His old passport with the extension has been invalidated, but he has a letter from the embassy and a stamp stating that the new passport replaces the old one. Advice from the community suggests that he should present both passports upon arrival at the airport, as immigration may move his retirement visa to the new passport. Additionally, they recommend contacting the French embassy in Bangkok for assistance and translating any documents as needed.

Just have him fly in and present BOTH passports when he gets stamped in. They'll move the stamps and everything right then.

Had this 2 times in Bueng Kn immigration. No problem. Just have your new and your old passport (with the old original visa s) at hand and they took over the old first "retirement" visa in to the new passport. So got a nw first retirement visa with old the old dates in my new passport. No letters from the embassy needed. Just always ask your vernment who gives out the new passport to not pt a whole in the pages with he visas in the old passport.

I arrived at Suvanabhum and did show 2 passports. (the old and the new) Did get the normal stamp for the visa based on retirement up to the date the old visa in the old passport mentioned. So arrived in july and the old visa was up to december Suvanabhum stamped a visa up to december in my new passport and i had to go to my regular immigration office in Bueng Kan, who did the transferring of the old first original visum in to my new passport at no costs.

I think I understand now, he got a new passport in China. Just contact the French Embassy in Bangkok, send them the copies of the passports and ask for the letter for Thai Immigration.

Thanks. Does he need the original ?

Get the letter translated. They probably think that they're helping by giving the letter in Chinese, seeing as they're in China, they may assume it's for the Chinese authorities.

The French Embassy gives out a letter for the Thai Immigration to change his Extension of Stay to his new passport in Chinese language?
