What should my friend do about his Thai visa overstay and getting a new passport?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I have a friend who is 19, and he's here in Thailand with his father. His passport is absolutely full of stamps because he used to go to school in Gibraltar when he lived in Spain.

The problem now is that he's overstayed his visa, and he wasn't able to get an extension because his passport is literally out of space for any more stamps.

The extension was due on the 29th of July, and now it's the 11th. So we're looking at the best route to get him a new passport and to help him renew his visa and extend it before the end of the month.

We’re also considering just paying the overstay fine and then having him fly out of the country and return to Thailand on a tourist visa again.

In Chiang Mai, so thinking Flight to Vietnam.

But whats the most rapid way to get a new passport with space

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a friend who is 19 years old with a full passport who has overstayed their visa in Thailand for 12 days. He is seeking advice on how to obtain a new passport to safely handle his visa situation, considering options like paying fines and leaving Thailand to return on a tourist visa. Many commenters advise that the best option is to immediately leave Thailand, pay the overstay fine at the airport, and contact his embassy for an emergency passport to avoid further legal issues.

Marty *********
How hard can it be?
Mitchell *******
How did he get into this situation in the first place is MY actual question. Self inflicted wound, so to speak.

And also, if he gets stopped by police during this period, he will have more issues to deal with.
Dzxyan *****
Overstay😒 Go out from Thailand ASAP! Always have space for stamp for go out from Thailand. Don’t talk the rubbish things that make yourself think comfortable. A friend or yourself? Don’t bluff us🧐
Craig *******
19 years old. Should be working. If not at that age when ?
Robert *********
Fly to a country without entry stamps and apply for an emergency passport there. Examples: Hong Kong, Malaysia (if national of certain countries and entry through KLIA airport automatic gate), or Australia, Korea, Singapore..., or home country of course
Ryan *******
Obviously he needs to get a new passport through his embassy. There is no excuse. He could have done it before he ran out of space. That's what I did.
Dave *********
I got mine in Bangkok from uk gov website link took a few weeks to get back they also do other countries
Ossie *********
Emergency passport at his embassy you don’t state nationality
John *********
Another quality tourist🤷🏾‍♀️
Ricky ********
He will have to manage his passport from his home country. He might not be allowed back in with a disrespectful overstay on his record.
Bob **********
Get an emergency travel document pay the 6-7000 baht fine at the airport go home and get a new passport don’t get caught before you get to the airport as you will be jailed then figure out when he can come back might be a short ban
Jeremy ********
If he gets passport checked by the BiB he’s in for a world of hurt, also by overstaying he’s hurting his chances of receiving a visa in the future

I would suggest a flight to his home country asap get a new passport and return

Plan B…Cambodia sells a year visa $300 no questions asked but you need passport pages to get it
Greg ***********
@Jeremy *******
problem is - his passport must have enough space for the ugly overstay stamp 😂
Gordon ************
You need two blank pages in a passport to “enter” Thailand. Immigration would have noticed this.
Greg ***********
@Gordon ***********
no, why would you on a tourist visa or visa-exempt? That's a small entry stamp. Six of these fit one passport page! One page, six entries !! You can definitely enter Thailand on an almost full passport. The Immigration officer doesn't care
Guy *********
I really don't understand why people can be so stupid..wake up
Liza ********
he should call his embassy and find out directly from them - it will not be the first time they have gotten and inquiry like this - and they will know what to do - way better than random people here. My only other input is he should consider leaving asap - overstay is taken seriously and can have ramifications beyond a fine - including refusal to allow return for a period of time. He should leave and sort it out re the new passport elsewhere - if he has already overstayed 2 weeks he needs to leave - pay a fine and beg forgiveness
Matt *********
Sounds like now he’s getting a different kind of education!
Nongnuch ********
the only safe route is: fly back home immediately and pay the overstay fine at the airport. Even on the full passport. On the way out there is no more exit stamp from Thailand through the automated gates. However, he will need a little bit of space for the OVERSTAY STAMP in his passport. If there isn't even this little space, he needs an emergency passport from his embassy 😄😃😄
David **********
What's being overlooked is "he's here with his father". Seems like their family problem, unless your 'friend' is in fact you. Always interesting to note that these dire situation posts are always someone asking for a 'friend' 🤦
David **********
Leave Thailand at once. Overstay is never good but its still somewhat small...dont let it get any bigger. Go home and get it sorted.
Mike **********
Airport flight out ASAP , 500 per day fine , if he’s arrested or if he’s required to show passport before he’s at airport he will get arrested fined & blacklisted .
Jo **********
do not overstay in the last year i have heard of many people being picked up by police for just 2 days overstay
Ann *****
He should leave Thailand immediately otherwise he will have problem in re entry. I don't know if he was not pointed out for blank pages in his passport when he landed last time. Anyways as advised by many members here ,he should pay for his overstay and leave and apply for tourist visa in his country.
Michael ********
Go home ASAP. You can get a new passport in UK in a few hours with fast track. 19 and dumb we all have made stupid mistakes that age but if he is with his father suely should be someone with sense.

Go before get picked up and get in a whole heap of trouble
Eamonn *******

common sense, ain't that common

Yes lots of people seem to leave it home when they come here

What makes you think, by over staying, you just pay the fine and no biggie??

It's huge, it's like a big dent on one's credit report, it shows, not trustworthy, which upon return next time, the second they swipe his passport, they see he's being flagged for violating the overstay rule, which is illegal ....

And you think, ah just pay the fine, no biggie 😂

Ur both smoking really strong stuff, if you think it's it a big deal 👍
Dave ***********
How will he be able to get any stamps/visas in neighbouring countries if he has no passport pages available? He needs to go back to his home country and get a new passport. Honestly it’s beyond belief that he’s just waited it out on overstay! Shows a complete lack of respect for the rules and regulations here.
Max *************
Leave the country,pay the overstay at the airport (a maximum of 20k baht) and fly back home and renew the passport. Then come back.
Gordon *******
Nongnuch ********
@Gordon ******
I hope that there still is enough space in his passport for the ugly overstay stamp
Max *************
@Nongnuch *******
Well,the stamp isn't actually that big. I've had a couple of those way back. 😎
John *******
Why didn’t he leave 2 weeks ago when he knew his visa was up and he couldn’t get an extension? If he is out of space, after leaving and trying to re-enter, how will he get stamped in? Wherever he goes will also require space in his passport as well. Imagine, if he started to address this 2+ weeks ago, before overstay, he might have a new passport already.
Nongnuch ********
@John ******
the only way is: fly back home on his full passport. On the way out there is no more exit stamp from Thailand through the automated gates. However, he will need a little bit of space for the OVERSTAY STAMP in his passport. If there isn't even this little space, he needs an emergency passport from his embassy
Gerg **********
He might get flagged from the overstay and not allowed back in if he tries to immediately return after renewing his passport, even if he does pay the fine. Or maybe they won’t say anything. It could go either way.
Luc ************
Fly home and get a new passport.
Jim ***********
Why wait until now? Should left before overstay . Needs new passport before returning... expensive or a lazy mistake but it's gona cost him. Leave ASAP best and only option or it's IDC
Chris **********
1 or 2 days overstay is already much but he has 13 days over? What about if police control him on the streets? Will they deport and blacklist him? He must be very carefully
Graham ******
@Chris *********
Yes they will, definitely
Nongnuch ********
Alternatively, visit the embassy of his country, ask them for an emergency passport, it will normally be issued on the same day . . . . then IMMEDIATELY book a flight, leave Thailand, pay the fine for the overstay at the airport Immigration, 500 THB for every overstay day. DON'T attempt to stay in Thailand! As long as he surrenders to authority at the airport on a ticket out of Thailand, everything will be fine. But if he gets caught inside Thailand on an overstay over 11 days, he will get arrested and detained and be forced to buy a flight ticket and held in airport detention center, some will stay there for weeks (!!) and will be banned from further entries into Thailand
Dany ********
this is wild… pretty stupid to wait out and go into overstay instead of fixing the problem when it occurred… some people really lack common sense, wow… leave the country and take the fine. come back when you/he has a new passport. only option…
Josh *********
@Dany *******
It seems like people in the current generation are not being taught proper world problems, or common sense, or even lack of pre-planning ahead of time, Absolute stupid idiot for doing this. I wouldn’t be suprised if you end up in a IDC… And good fucking luck to the guy 😂😂😂
Jim ***********
@Josh ********
yes now on so many days overstay. His passport stamps been in ages this is laziness or thinks he can do what want. Both wrong decisions
Josh *********
@Jim **********
Not just Laziness, Pure Stupidity and Idiotic Behavior especially in a country that does not take kindly to overstayer's, In all honesty, This question was a waste of time because I can most likely say that he will get caught either by Immigration Police, Traffic Police or Any Police as soon as he enters any border or airport, Never leave it this late, I hope he learns the hard way how much of fucking idiot he is...
Nongnuch ********
@Dany *******
It is more than just stupid- it is absolutely crazy to think that he just needs to visit Immigration with a new passport, being on XY days of overstay, and expect to receive a touristic extension? How stupid can people be?
John *********
@Nongnuch *******
so stupid, it just sounds like another wind up 🤡
John **********
The best thing he could do is fly to his home country and get a new passport before returning, paying the overstay fine when he leaves. If he's from the UK a new passport inside Thailand would take around 3-4 weeks and he would be on overstay all that time. Overstay is never a good idea, if one is spotted by the police to be on overstay (of even one day) he can be arrested, deported and banned from Thailand for 5 years. Get him to the airport and home with enough cash in his pocket to pay the 500 baht per day overstay fine
Brad **********
He doesn’t want to end up in the IDC
Terence *********
His main problem is visa..Overstay....how long..1 day or what...?
Judy *******
@Terence ********
14 days so far I think
Nongnuch ********
😲😮😲 Your plan will not work!! He should NEVER remain on overstay and he won't be able to receive any extension, not even with a new passport! He must IMMEDIATELY buy a flight out of Thailand, go to the airport ASAP and leave Thailand. Showing his overstay at the airport Immigration, while holding a ticket out of Thailand, will be regarded as "surrendering to the authorities", which will prevent him from being arrested, detained and banned from Thailand. He also can visit Immigration, show them the overstay, he will be made to pay the fine and asked to leave Thailand right after. He will need to pay a fine for the overstay, 500 THB for every day. 12 days x 500 THB = 6000 Baht. KEEP IN MIND - if he gets outed inside Thailand on an overstay, he will face SEVERE consquences
Nongnuch ********
a big elephant is standing in the room - is there still enough space in his passport for that ugly overstay stamp ? 😎
Andrew ********
Contact embassy to get new passport they should be able to assist him with this issue may still have a fine to pay but hopefully not a ban. A full pass port book is always an issue
Wannikea *********
@Andrew *******
"may still"?? Absolutely positively will...
Nongnuch ********
@Andrew *******
it will take much too long to get a new passport. He will sum up too many days of overstay and he is running the risk of getting arrested, detained and blacklisted. He needs an emergency passport from his embassy, it takes a day or two, and then immediately leave Thailand on a flight back to his home country. Pay 500 THB for every day of overstay at the airport. He should not stay in Thailand any longer
Tania ********
Depending on the country you are from you can renew your passport either in Thailand or somewhere like Vietnam (we recently renewed a British passport in Da Nang and it was a fairly easy process and it took around 3 weeks to get the new passport)
Nongnuch ********
@Tania *******
someone mentioned that for entering Vietnam, you need two blank pages left in your passport . . . . . he needs to immediately leave Thailand on a flight back to his home country. Pay 500 THB for every day of overstay at the airport. He should not stay in Thailand any longer. I hope that there still is enough space in his passport for the ugly overstay stamp
Josh *********
Go to your national embassy in Shitland, (Personal Distaste for Thailand), Ask about getting an emergency travel document, return home and renew your passport within a week. Simple Dont look at cutting corners and using cheap ways, So it official and you won’t have any problems.

that was me thinking as well. He could get an emergency passport issued from his embassy, which can be had within a day or two, then buy a flight ticket back to his home country and pay the overstay fine at the airport. He shouldn't wait much longer! The plan of his friend is outright stupid, because not even a new passport will enable him to receive a touristic extension from Immigration - on the contrary, he is running into the risk of getting arrested
