Will I get my marriage visa extension in time if I apply 45 days before the expiration date?

Hello everyone, I live in Chiang Mai and I have a quick question about visa.

Last year I applied for my year marriage visa extension 45 days before last day which was end of September but my consideration period was until end of October. So I was waiting for my visa 135 days.

This year I plan to apply again for a year extension 45 days before expire date which is end of September, but I really need to go home right after that for family reasons so my question is this. If I apply 45 days before expire date is it likely that I will be able to get the extension within those days ?

Has anyone got the same experience in getting extra month for consideration ? It seemed weird for me because that was my second extension but at that time I really did not question that.

Thank you for help

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user in Chiang Mai seeks advice on whether applying for a marriage visa extension 45 days before the expiration date will allow enough time for processing, given previous delays experienced. Comments from other users highlight their personal experiences, emphasizing that applicants are often required to return one month after their visa expires, suggesting that even early applications may not expedite the process. Additionally, one commenter recommends bringing travel plans to help clarify options with immigration officials.

From my experience (4 years of extensions for non-O based on marriage to a Thai) in Chiang Mai, you will be asked to come back 1 month after your extension expires regardless of how early you applied. So for the past 4 years, no matter how early I went, my stamp said to come back July 19- a month after the expiration (June 19th). This year, I applied May 31st and hopped on an airplane that night to head back to the US (family emergency). I asked if they could issue the extension that day and they said absolutely not. They said I had to be back before July 19th which is when my re-entry permit expires. I'm currently back and in quarantine in Bangkok.

Same experience here with CM immigration, go 15 days in advance

Chiang Mai is strict, they advise you to come 2 weeks in advance (for your Thai family extension). You will get 30 days under consideration. If you come more early your"under consideration" period will be longer. Last time I got 7 weeks...

So you had the plan to leave Thailand but you are supposed to be in Thailand on the specified date regarding the itinerary...

In some immigration offices, there is the possibility to negotiate about the application or returning to close under consideration stamp date if you can 'prove' you are not in Thailand for whole the period. Open tickets wouldn't help for this. I wondered CM is such strict even if you proved you are not in Thailand for whole the period.

I'm not quite sure what you mean but it wasn't a planned trip. It was an emergency and I bought the tickets 2 nights before leaving with enough time for a covid test and a last minute trip to immigration to renew my extension and get a re-entry permit. I knew I had to be finished with quarantine and back in CM by July 19.

Yes. I told them I was flying out of Chiang Mai to Bangkok later that afternoon and then to the US that night. But I wasn't planning to stay longer than a month and if I had to, I would have come back with a tourist visa or applied for a new non-O based on Thai family. They weren't mean about it, but that's just how it was. They assured me I could get a COE with an under consideration stamp which I was worried about.

yep, that's how I've seen it work too most of the time :/ and you can indeed get a COE on an under consideration stamp you select this choice
Ellie *******
That was hard.. Did you ask with fixed plan/air ticket?
Ellie *******
I guess one of your option is bringing your fixed travel plan when (or before) you apply for next extension and ask to immigration office what they or you can do..

I agree to try and appeal to their humanity, nobody in their right mind really wants to leave Thailand and re-enter on a whim with all the expense and detainment, hopefully they will see it as an emergency type matter and enact some discretion if possible.

thank you I will go ask them tomorrow morning. However I do appreciate all of your advices. Thank you very very much

They usually add the under consideration period to the expiration date of your current extension.

NOW if you're going to apply for your yearly extension (no matter when) and get the under consideration stamp then leave the country you need to buy a re-entry permit AND you need to be back before that stamp runs out (or you start all over again with the Non-O and the extension again)
