Can I apply for a 30-day extension of my visa waiver before applying for a Non O visa in Chiang Mai?

I am from the U.S. and I am currently in Chiang Mai but I will be traveling for a few weeks in Taiwan. When I come back I want to apply in country for the Non O based on being over 50. I know I can do that on a 30-day visa waiver (it was discussed in the comments on a recent post) and that I will need to have sufficient days remaining for the under consideration period (I believe 21 days for Chiang Mai?) Unfortunately, for some tax reasons, I don't want to bring in the 800k to my Thai bank account this calendar year, which means I would not have enough days to apply for the Non O if I understand the situation correctly (because I fly back to Chiang Mai on 12/18). My question is, can I apply for a 30 day extension of the visa waiver entry and then apply for the Non O or will I need to leave the country and enter again? Alternatively, can/should I apply for a tourist visa while I am in Taiwan? I wouldn't mind doing that if the eVisa is an option but I would rather not waste sightseeing time visiting a consulate/embassy there to apply in person.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, currently in Chiang Mai, is seeking information on applying for a Non O visa after returning from Taiwan. They know they can use a 30-day visa waiver but are concerned about the timing and financial requirements. The conversation reveals that they can apply for a 30-day extension on their visa waiver and then proceed with the Non O application, as long as they have enough business days remaining on their entry stamp. Alternatively, the user considers applying for a tourist visa in Taiwan but learns that there is no eVisa option available, requiring an in-person application.

As far as applying for a tourist visa.. There is NO eVisa system in place there, you slog on over to the Thailand Trade and Economic Office in Taipei and apply in person

So you either do that or you come in visa exempt, take the 30 day extension and go from there.. Just watch your timeline..

Why not just apply for an non o e visa outside of the country and get 90 days?

You can certainly take the one 30 day extension you're allowed on the visa exempt entry you're comin' in on and THEN apply for the in country Non-O visa up in Chiang Mai.

The actual posted rule is you need 15 BUSINESS days left on your current stamp to apply (SO watch for holidays as those aren't business days ๐Ÿ˜› )
