What should I do when changing my passport after being granted a DTV visa in Thailand?

Hi there, I would like to ask how other people have proceeded when after being granted their DTV visa, they have had to change their passport -for whatever the reason- and re-enter Thailand with the new one while their DTV visa is linked/granted to the older one. No theories or suggestions -just real scenarios of people that had actually done this, please. Cheers!

TLDR : Answer Summary
When changing your passport while holding a DTV visa, it is essential to carry both your old and new passports. Several community members shared their experiences: they were able to present both passports during entry into Thailand, where immigration officials recognized the DTV linked to the old passport. In some cases, special stamps were issued in the new passport to indicate the transfer of visas or important stamps from the old passport. However, if the old passport is lost, reapplying for a DTV visa is necessary.

I went to depart Phuket after getting a new Aus passport. Forgot to bring my old one with my last entry stamp. Was sent to counter 1. Called my partner who took photos of my passport pages back at the house. Showed to IO and they did a special stamp in my new passport effectively "transferring" the last stamp in my old passport to my new passport. I was very lucky not to miss my flight... should've known better 🤦‍♂️

Mine is a nonO 1yr extensions stamp and bring both passports to immigration office ....they transfer the valid extensions stamp and multiple re entry permit onto the new passport and they also have a special stamp that states your old passport number being transfered to the current passport

Carry both passports as your visa is issued against your old passport

I took both with me and had no issues. They stamped my new one 🙂

As the others have stated (and I have an email from the Thai authorities), you'll need to carry both passports. It is not possible (despite what some have said) to transfer your DTV to a new passport, even if you visit the immigration centre.

If you lose your old passport, or no longer have access to it, you will need to reapply for a DTV from scratch.

Is it not possible to transfer even if you have a stamped DTV in the passport rather than an email/PDF?

I very much doubt it, as there's also no reason there not to just have both passports with you.

What I received was this:

"Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your email. If your current passport with your visa has expired, you must carry both your old passport (containing the valid visa) and your new passport whenever you travel to Thailand. Immigration officers will refer to your visa on your old passport when processing your entry and stamp your new passport accordingly. In the event that you lose the old passport containing the visa, you will be required to apply for a new visa without exception. Please note that we are unable to transfer a visa from an old passport to a new one.

Best regards,

The Visa Team"

Cheers for the answer. They do transfer other visas to new passports with much less periods of validity.

Exactly. A few years ago I had to have a 30 day visa exempt stamp transferred to my new passport. If the DTV is digital, I guess there s nothing to transfer. Odd that they require you to physically carry the old passport. When they swipe the new one all of the old info is there.

There would be something to transfer, and that would be to update the passport number in their systems, so that the new passport would be registered instead of the old. But they don't do that, and they won't.

I thought if it was an actual physical stamp, they would transfer. Pretty sure there was a post on here saying they had it done. It is quite well known Immigration are not the biggest fans of the DTV - they probably just cannot be arsed lol

Immigration don't ISSUE the DTV, so I doubt they'd be able to create a new one for a new passport.

Yes they do not issue but they still extend and do 90 day etc just as with any other Visa. Once you are inside the country it is immigration rules you are bound by not MFA. Keep carrying 2 passport and hope you never lose them.

Basically carry both for 5 years

It's ok. No problem. Bring both passport and they check both.
