What should I do when transferring my DTV visa to a new passport due to damage?

Transfer of visa update:

I damaged my passport with the DTV and had to make a new one. I went to immigration and transferred my current DTV stamp and the new stamp has my old passport number written on it. I was told by everyone that I had to carry both passports, but I just went through BKK passport and only handed my new passport which was accepted - I had the old one ready just in case, but he never asked to see it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user successfully transferred their DTV visa stamp to a new passport after damaging their old one. While immigration staff initially advised carrying both passports, the user was able to travel through Bangkok airport with only the new passport. Community comments suggest it's generally acceptable to use just the new passport, but some users recommend carrying both for safety. Additionally, there are discussions about the visa transfer process and advice on handling different immigration scenarios.

They transferred your entry stamp and acknowledged your old passport, they did nothing with your visa itself so make sure you hang on to it

Where is the passport number written on the DTV stamp?

I had to change passports (old one was full) and it's hit and miss. Mostly I just hand the print out of my DTV and if you smile and are polite they'll be obliging. But every now and again you get someone (Thai IO) who's either having a bad day or just looking for a fight, and they'll make it difficult. But having re-entered into Thailand on my DTV at least 20 times I've always got through with just the new passport. There is no facility for Thai Immigration to transfer the existing visa to the new passport number. Seems a blatent miss by them (to me), but it is what it is.

I agree that it is a miss that the visa can not be transferred to the new passport number, but in many countries it works that way and you have to carry old and new passport. Some countries have the possibility to put in a remark in the new passport that it replaces old passport with number xxxxx, but no idea if this is enough for Thai immigration always or also is a hit and miss.

Blaming an IO for having a bad day or looking for a fight when he or she is only following the rules is a bit unfair in my opinion.

didn't ask for your opinion! Just relaying my experience.

Telling an IO has a bad day or is looking for a fight is not an experience either, but also an opinion. When they want to see the old passport that is perfectly OK.

I think you need a dictionary more than carrying 2 passports.

Why should I need a dictionary or do I need 2 passports? There are a lot of pages left because I plan ahead...

if you would be so kind, then could you upload a scan or photo of this ink stamp you received from your local Thai Immigration Office inside Thailand, redacting any personal identity information

Also, do you mean you had a DTV Visa STICKER from the Thai Embassy/Thai Consulate physically in your old passport, or, do you have a DTV E–Visa PDF File that you printed out as a Hard Copy Paper???

Just like any other visa in any other country. You just transfer it to your new passport. Done it a few times with a new passport when the old one was full. Why would you need to carry a clipped void passport as well? The advice from some people🤣
Luit *****************
Anonieme deelnemer 101 It certainly is not normal practice in all countries and all other visa that the visa can be transferred to a new passport.

What you call the advice from some people is just the official advice from Thai immigration, and MOST other countries, only some countries transfer a visa from one passport to the other.

P.S. Just use this link for general information:

Did you get a new 180 days stamp in your new passport? Did you show visa?

Just to get a clear picture:

Did you get new passport in Thailand?

Did Immigration Office transfer the entry stamp of your old passport to the new passport with number of old passport while you were still in Thailand?

Did you exit the country and reenter the country with the new passport, showed only new passport and visa and got new stamp, just as normal without any number written to it?

I'd still carry both for the next 4-5yrs, congrats on smooth sailing this time through.
