Does anyone know what happens if the passport expires before the DTV does? The person at the embassy told me that "I have to bring the new passport along with the old one" for them to transfer the visa... but it doesn't make sense since, to make the new passport, you're supposed to give up your old one or lose it or something.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If your passport expires before your Thai DTV visa, you generally need to present both your old and new passports when transferring your visa. It's common practice for embassies to allow individuals to keep their old passport (which will be marked as expired) until the visa transfer is completed. Some embassies, such as the U.S. embassy, permit you to keep both passports active for a short period. Always ensure to inform immigration about your passport renewal; they are usually prepared to handle such situations and can provide guidance on transferring your visa.

Seems they are prepared for this. Someone I met had Thai handwriting on his visa, I didn’t.

Google translate showed the writing noted that passport expires before visa and to allow transfer.

They will be especially aware as dependents are part of the visa. Children are only issued 5 year passports (well in UK - I don’t know all countries!).

You will be fine.

Your old passport will be returned along with the new one. Usually the old one will have the sides clipped or a hold punched through it to deactivate it. Immigration can transfer the visa to the new passport

Correct but once the old passport is punched through it is invalid. Why not transfer all visas to the new one before?, It's so easy, it took me just 5 minutes at the immigration.

Some countries allow you to have two passports. Many do not. In the US, you must submit your old passport to receive a new one then both are returned with the old one inactivated.

Not sure where you’re from but in uk where I’m from when you renew your passport they send you the old one with cut pages to know it’s out of use so you should be fine 👍

Does anyone know how this works as mine is a year out to

Not sure about the DTV but I renewed my passport on a tourist visa once and I just presented both passports to immigration when I left- this is if the passport renewal is done within Thailand. You just let the officer know that you renewed your passport and they handle the rest.

In this case though you might want to present yourself to immigration, i think they would be able to copy the DTV over to the new passport, or give instructions on what to do.

All that being said, the best idea might be just making sure that you still have 6 years of validity left on your passport when you apply so that this won’t become an issue for you later. At least for me it was more easy than I realized to renew my passport.

If all the visas in your old passport are transferred to the new one, why do you want to keep the old one?

The DTV Visa will only be issued to the ending date of your current passport.

You will NOT get a full 5 years DTV Visa.

Suggest you get a NEW passport before you get the DTV visa.

this isn’t true

I previously switched a work visa from an old to new passport. You cannot cancel the old passport before switching out the visa because once your passport is canceled, your visa is cancelled.

My embassy (U.S.) allowed me to keep two active passports and asked me to return the old one for cancellation after I got the visa transferred.

I did that and it all worked out fine.

You nornally keep the expired passport and use the visas on it

Present both passports when entering, the entry exit stamps will be put in the new passport. Make sure when you do apply for a new passport you specify you want the old returned if you send it in.

You keep your old passport

You can keep your old passport and use visas in it
Urs ********
@Vitaly *******
No! The old passport is stamped as invalid, and so are all the visas in it.

@Urs *******
quite often they issue visas with expiration date aligned with the passport one, but it’s not always the case

@Vitaly *******
Do what you believe is right.
Wannikea *********
@Vitaly *******
that would be the case with extensions, but likely not visas.

@Wannikea ********
not at all, in my experience - depends on the country. F.e. US visas are usually valid for 3y, could be way past the passport’s expiration date, while Schengen ones are usually issued with the expiration date not exceeding the passport’s

I’ve been using visas in expired passports for decades. You have to transfer Thai visas like Non-O/B/PE/SE to new passports, but it doesn’t affect validity. With DTV which is most times is stickerless, you won’t have to do anything, most likely

But on the e-visa is the old passport number, and I guess that will also be in the registration, so I think you will have to do anything
