Can I enter Thailand with a new passport and have my DTV visa transferred at the airport?

I have a DTV visa. Next year my passport will need to be renewed in my home country. As I understand from reading different posts about this topic, when I'm in Thailand again, I can just go to immigration with both passports and they will transfer the visa to the new passport.

My question is this: can I enter the country by BKK airport with the new passport (carrying the old one as a backup) and the e-visa? What will the immigration officer as airport customs do? Will that officer transfer the visa? Or will he give me a 60 day stamp and I need to go to immigration office and have the proper DTV stamp and visa transfered?

Do I need to do this process for the remainder of the validity of the visa? Because if that's the case then I need to carry the old passport every time I enter the country, go to immigration every time and have it transfered.

Or will it be a one-time transfer and I will get a new e-visa document showing the new passport number?

I hope I explained my question clearly. Thanks for reading and answering :)

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you renew your passport while on a DTV visa, you can enter Thailand using your new passport along with your old passport that contains the visa. Immigration will not transfer the visa to your new passport; instead, you will receive a new entry stamp in your new passport. You must show both passports upon entering. It's advised to carry both passports for the remainder of your visa validity period, as only entry stamps can be transferred, not the visa itself. You might inquire at immigration if they can add a notation in your new passport referencing your old one to ease future entry.

Every re-entry you get a new stamp. You need to show your Visa paper only.

When I tried to transfer the DTV stamp to my new passport at Chonburi Immigration I was told NO. It would be transferred by immigration at the airport which is what occurred months later on departure.

You travel with both passports for the duration of your visa. When you arrive in BKK you show both passports and a print out of your visa, you will get an entry stamp in your new passport. They will not transfer the visa to the new passport, just continue to carry both

Since it's an e-visa, I don't understand the need to carry 2 passports. With a traditional visa sticker, then yes, that makes sense and I've done it that way before.

because the old passport number is the number on the evisa

You just use both passports until your DTV expires. They cannot put anything in your old passport as it's expired, but they need to see the passport number matches your visa.

You can go to immigration and see if they'll put a notation in your new passport that references your old passport number, so you don't have to carry both passports. Some immigration offices will do it while others will not.

Please bring both passports when you enter the country. My old one was damaged so I had to get a new one. I went to immigration and they put a stamp in my new passport with a phrase along the lines of "Passport number xxxxx is a replacement for passport number xxxxx". I asked the immigration officer at the airport on my last arrival if that stamp was enough and she said to ALWAYS have both passports with me when I arrive. They want to see the old passport with the number that's on the visa. They didn't care about the stamp in the new passport. This could also be different with another immigration officer so you never know but I'd bring both just to be safe. Good luck.

Thank you Brandon for your answer. Much appreciated!

Visa will not be transferred, only stamps for a stay can be transferred.

You will need to take old and new passport for the rest of the visa validity period, so for your conveniance it might be better to apply for a new passport first.

Thanks for your answer. I already have the DTV visa right now. So, then in the future every time I enter the country with my renewed passport, they will put a stamp in my old passport at the airport and I have to go to immigration to have it transfered to the new passport. Do I understand it correct?

Anonieme deelnemer no, you present old passport, new passport and visa, and they will stamp the new passport.

Some people say an offical remark in the new passport referring to the old passport number also might work.

The transferring of stamps is only for other type of visa where you get an extension of stay each year and need a re-entry permit.

Because those extensions are done by immigration, they can transfer.

DTV is multi entry so you get new entry stamp of stay every time.
