Has anyone had the experience where they got the DTV on their new passport but are still using their old passport as it still has space. What was the procedure when arriving in Thailand?

Most passports become invalid once you get a new one. Many countries even require return of the old passport first so that it can be corner cut or otherwise indicated as no longer valid, before they will give the new one, regardless of whether the reason for getting it is because the old one expired, or is damaged, or is running out of pages. Is that not the case for your country?

Correct. Then you can carry the old one alongside the new one, since valid visas inside the old passport are still valid, despite the passport no longer being valid.

if I understand the OP's post though, they are saying they wish to continue using the old passport (presumably for entry stamps) since it still has space, even though the DTV was issued for the new passport. This is what doesn't make sense, as the old passport should have become invalid as a travel document when the new one is issued, so can no longer be used as the entry passport. This is not the same as having a valid visa on the old passport, which can still be presented to enter on the new passport.

The BIG question is

Do you have an eVisa <- that is a PDF file the consulate emailed you which is your actual visa that you got when you applied online thru the eVisa system

OR

Do you have a "sticker visa" <- that the consulate stuck IN your passport when you applied in person for the visa

IF you have the eVisa and get a new passport you need to have the print out of the DTV visa PDF, copies of the data page of the old passport and your last DTV entry stamp from the old passport, you show those with the new passport when you go to stamp IN to thailand and you'll get stamped in on the new one no problem

Where as if you have a sticker visa, you carry BOTH passports (because the visa can't be moved from the old passport to the new one and you have to show the VISA every time you stamp in). They will see the visa in the old passport and stamp you in on the new one

Thank you for that Tod. I have the E Visa issued to my new passport however I am in China now on my old my passport and will be traveling from here to Thailand also on my old passport. I suppose when I get to Thailand I will just show them the print out of my DTV and both passports. Should be fine.

If you've been issued a new passport, the old passport is invalid. You can use it, but if the system shows it's invalid, expect some serious problems

I don’t think that is entirely true. Why would there be serious problems? I could just show both my passports and immigration could clearly see that my old passport is about to run out of space so I have prepared my new passport in time for my visa. I think this is the most sensible thing to do in this situation rather than put a brand new visa in an old passport that only has a few pages left.

Anonymous participant The point I'm making is only one passport is valid. Yes you can show both - the EXPIRED one, and the VALID one. The scenario you suggested initially was you would show only the EXPIRED passport, passing it off as a valid passport.
