What should I do if I have a difficult experience with an immigration officer in Thailand?

Had a strange encounter at BKK Airport last night. I assume the IO was having a bad day or something.

The line was taking very long and some people were also longer than usual.

Arrived presented passport, she asks for visa and I provided print out.

Looks at the screen ask what I’m doing here I said holiday workcation, she asked what type visa I apply I said dtv for digital nomad.

Starts taking photos of her screen and seemed very hesitant to stamp. This took about 15 minutes.

After she stamped I asked what was the problem, and she rudely replied “Up to me not you!”

She handed back my passport and visa and I went through.

Never experienced anything like it before.

Was just returning to thailand after spending 4 weeks back home in Australia.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat shared their unsettling experience at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, where they faced a long wait and a grumpy immigration officer during their entry. After submitting a DTV visa (Digital Nomad Visa), the officer hesitated before stamping the passport, taking around 15 minutes to process. The expat questioned the officer about the delay, which provoked a curt response. Comments from the community suggested that asking questions during immigration could lead to negative encounters. Many advised against interacting too much with immigration officers to avoid complications, citing cultural norms and personal experiences.

And this IS the reason why they don’t want people recording at these counters. Good on you for being well mannered, but BS IO officers are commonplace in Bangkok.

Avoid the angry looking women officials at all cost. The ones that take too long to stamp others or ask too many questions. Look around queues and move to the one that is moving fast. The ones with angry expressions on their faces(men or women) or furrowed brows are the ones to avoid.

These individuals think the hold the supreme key, so they are always on a power trip.

Once in Malaysia, I saw an IO slap a person cause they didn't understand English.

You have to be dim to make any mention of work to an immigration officer unless you have a work visa.

Yes, I know DTV allows some remote work.

Have been to many countries on my 7 month trip and Thailand was the only one to stop me to say my passport (which is obviously 9 years old) didn't look like me. Then asked for driver's license (5 years old) Also not me.

After all the people giving advice about not asking questions, it is falling on deaf ears. Oh well, those who are not taking the advice, keep asking questions when nothing is wrong. Just because they make you wait, 10 or 15 minutes, and then let you thru with a proper stamp, it doesn’t mean there was something wrong, sometime immigration officers do that to see how you are gonna react, or maybe they don’t like you, who cares, you’re in, don’t potentially create a problem where there isn’t one. But again, don’t take that advice, and do it your way.

As you said, she was likely having a bad day, or it’s her personality. I find that immigration officials are unpredictable pretty much everywhere you go. Considering how many times the Thai authorities change the rules, the number of directives - often confusing- they get and the large number of passports they have to see and inspect per day, I wouldn’t be surprised. I cross the border frequently and have had immigration officials spend too long going through the pages, searching for I don’t know what, looking at their computer monitor as if it had frozen, often without muttering a single word. I don’t ask questions unless it’s obvious, for example, that they’re looking for a visa and stamp and cannot see it. Most of the time I never know why they took so long. The only time I asked if there was a problem, I got a cold stare and silence so I no longer ask.

At Beijing airport they have buttons by the immigration desks where you are invited to rate the performance of the officer dealing with you. You know, 1 for bad, 5 for excellent. Thailand does not have these for obvious reasons. They'd only need one button, so it would be pointless.

It sounds like a very confrontational question when directly translated to Thai.

She also probably felt bad for taking a long time, and felt called out for it when you asked her the question, which is like losing face.

There probably wasn't any serious problem, the DTV is still fairly new. Their job is just very stressful as the rules are constantly being updated and there are many things to look out for.

I've noticed people in some kind of authority tend to get very triggered if you ask questions here, even if they are quite important ones. I've had it with Thai doctors sometimes even. They see it as undermining their status instead of curiosity. They expect you to sit there in silence and just do as your told and dont question anything. Can be a bit frustrating when you need answers, you have to drag info from them while they get more and more frustrated and yawn at you 🫠

To be honest, I don’t even know how you could ask the authority if everything is alright without it sounding suspicious or not good. In Thai culture it is more about respect to authority.

I can’t help but wonder if something popped up that she had to deal with that wasn’t related at all to you but you were left just standing there.

Very true. Maybe ask “have I done something wrong” to put the onus on you. I went for a driving licence renewal and the lady doing the paper work wasn’t having a good day. When I handed her my paperwork I said I was scared. She changed her tune straight away and asked why. I said I hoped I had all the paperwork and hadn’t made a mistake. She smiled and said don’t worry I can help you. I needed one extra photocopy and rather than being sent to go and do it she got up and did it herself. My done was linked to my old passport and she asked if I had that passport. I apologised and said sorry I don’t. She said don’t worry we will link you drivers licence to you pink ID and smiled and I was on my way. She changed her tune at the next person. 😂

she had never seen a DTV before, it made her feel insecure and unprofessional and it made her stall to regain her self-importance, then asking what the problem was made her lash out because there in actuality was no problem. I entered in October had a similar issue, lady had no idea what a DTV was and looked at the printout like it was written in hieroglyphs and then looked at me several times like I was a murder suspect, called a supervisor who dismissively just told her to stamp me in. She did it, then checked my passport from front to back once more and eyeballed me again and then reluctantly pushed me through.

I avoid female IOs at BKK like the plague. They're always more difficult than the male ones for some reason.

in Malaysia the female IO basically wanted to get me to her home and do spanky spanky 😂 she didn't hide it either, after a lot of compliments I looked better than my passport and many girls would have a happy time with me 🙃 and said "i have your details 🤓" and I just laughed sheepishly and said thanks and bye 🫡

100%. The females are usually a lot more unpredictable. Maybe their time of the month or something something. The younger ones seem more ok, the 35+ I avoid like the plague. Give me the stern military looking uncles any day 😂.

you have every right to ask if there is a problem. Time, money and effort have been spent to ensure we arrive legally. Its not for some jobs worth allow access dependant upon their mood.

jobs worth? She's the immigration officer. It's her job. Asking what purpose the visit could have been because she was double checking what he was using the DTV for because you can't work in Thailand only remote working.

Ignorance shows in your post. You have no idea what may have presented on her screen. Could have been a possible hit for a known offender being referred to superior officer for checking, as an example. There can be any number of interactions that lead to delay. Do you really think the border control officer is going to explain about their intelligence?

It doesn’t matter and it’s none of your business.

You’re at their mercy.

Only an idiot would be dumb enough to challenge them.

She was right. Whether you like it or not, it’s up to her, whether it’s 15 minutes or 15 hours.

Stop acting like you have rights. Your indignation comes off as privilege, and you have none.

Get over yourself or stay home.
