Should I apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) from Australia or Thailand?

Hi, from Australia hoping to get my DTV. I am currently in Thailand, just over 2 weeks left. First question, is it best to apply for it once I arrive back to Australia or start the process now. I thought I should see an agent but after stumbling across this group it looks like it’s easy enough to do it on your own. I have had my own abn and sole trader business doing web and graphic design for over 15 years, and use xero and file my tax returns every year so I assume that would allow me to qualify for it? Is there a minimum amount I should be making to qualify? Regarding the savings, this is where I am stuck. I only have a few thousand AUD in my actual savings account as I have the majority of my money directly in my home loan. Would it be best for me to withdraw that money from my home loan and put it directly in my savings account? Would I have to then wait 3 months? Thanks in advance

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user in Thailand is seeking guidance on applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV). They inquire if it is better to start the application process while still in Thailand or wait until they return to Australia. The user has legal business ownership in Australia and requires information on financial qualifications, specifically about the minimum income and the amount needed in savings. Community comments clarify that one must apply from outside Thailand, advise on accumulating the needed THB 500,000 in a personal savings account for at least 3 months, and offer tips on documentation and application processes.

You cannot apply now, as you are in Thailand and you must be outside of Thailand to apply for a visa through the e-visa system. You need to be physically within the jurisdiction of the embassy or consulate you apply through. Also this is one of the first notifications you get on the e-visa website.

I included cover letters on everything and used ChatGPT a lot tbf but the group likes to overcomplicate it.

The portal is very straight forward, just make sure it makes sense for a human to look at. Have the balance easily visible, evidence the account is yours (your name & account number in bank statements etc), a cover letter explaining your work - I made sure to be clear I had no Thai clients or staff. For proof of location I included photo of exit stamp from Thailand, my flight itinerary to Aus etc.

I used a step by step guide that had letter templates and checklists that made it really easy to go through the process, and it was very affordable, compared to agent charges.

I estimate it saved me about 10 hours of my time!

Got my visa in 4 business days.

PM me and I can share the link with you!

message sent. You could start preping the documents now, but dont apply until you are back in Aust. You could qualify for workcation DTV. There is no minimum income requirement for this visa, but I believe it does help - you can write a letter as the sole trader regarding this using the templates i mentioned above.

As for the savings you will need 500,000 THB in a personal bank account - and ideally for 3 months, so transfer it now and apply soon.

Hi Mark, from our experience there is no issue applying for the visa using your sole trader business documentation. You will likely be asked to provide supporting documents such as invoices, contracts, and a professional portfolio.

While there is no fixed minimum monthly income required for the DTV, the main challenge in your case would be demonstrating the THB 500,000 financial requirement. You should hold this amount in a personal savings or current account for a period of at least 3 months. Please note that crypto wallets and investment accounts are generally not accepted.

I suggest transferring the required funds into your savings account as soon as possible to meet this timeframe!

Hope this helps! Feel free to reach out with any other questions. While you're looking into the Workcation route, we've also helped over 400 students successfully secure their DTV through our Soft Power cooking program if you ever decide to explore that option instead!
