What should I do if I can't get a bank account or a non-immigrant visa in Thailand?

I am going crazy.

I realize I made a mistake that I did not get my non-immigrant visa before I came to Thailand . The bank is telling me they cannot open an account until I get the visa. Immigration is telling me they will not give me the visa until I have a bank account.

The bank tells me I need a phone number. I am at Jungceylon Mall in Patong. The phone store is telling me they cannot give me a cheap phone so that I have a phone number to give the bank unless I go all the way to Phuket town to get documents.

Is this crazy?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat in Thailand faces a common dilemma: unable to open a bank account without a non-immigrant visa, yet immigration won't issue the visa without a bank account. After trying to acquire a phone number to meet banking requirements, the individual discovers options for a SIM card at 7-11 and plans to travel to Cambodia for the necessary visa application. The comments from the community provide various solutions and experiences, emphasizing the need for proper visa preparation before arrival and the use of agents for assistance.

Hmm. Embarrassed to report it took one immigration visit one month ago to change 90 day e-TR to 90 day non O, within an hour had bkk and kasikorn bank accounts. Have never border bounced. TR only since 1984 to present. No farang tax. No nonsense. Didn't sweat too much in my shirt/jacket. Rudimentary Thai speaking skills. Good Luck.

I don't get it. So many countries are going crazy because of all the immigrants.. Thailand is just protecting themselves more and more. So we don't end up like Germany or America. Why are people complaining about it ? It's not even your country ? There was an easy way by doing all the visa things BEFORE. But now it's more complicated... That's normal, it's not "Thai bureaucracy" , y'all ever been to Switzerland with visa ? 🤦🏻‍♀️If that's really too much...maybe some people should consider going somewhere else 🤷🏻‍♀️

absolutely not. Most people that come here. Don't pay taxes to Thailand, don't even learn the language. And just "use" Thailand for their "easy and better life" . That's what other people from other countries HATE about illegal immigrants too. So where is the difference ??? Of course not "all" but, that's the thing that us Thai people can't stand anymore...seeing how the "expats" live their best life without even integrating themselves into the community or the culture AND still complaining. "Mass" immigration is what happens at the moment..the cost go up higher. Thais won't be able to afford anything in their own country and then we get treated by expats like sht. Alot of Thais really hope visa regulations gets stricter.

where is the difference? Contribution to economy.

Thai society/culture is also much more closed making it difficult to integrate, even if you know the language. Great for tourists but a lot more challenging for people staying long term.
นาตาชา ********
@Ramses *************
contribution to economy. What ? 😂
David ******
@Ramses *************
not helping the economy, more money in the economy chasing the limited amounts of goods and services, equals inflation. When expat comes in and is willing to pay more for an apartment or condo, it means that Thai person does not have the opportunity to competitively compete for that same apartment based on their income. It will drive the citizens away or increase prices for them. If the amount of goods and services does not increase, it does not make life better. The gentrification of Thailand is a real possibility, and we can at least acknowledge that fact.

But you know, China is making it easier to obtain Visa as they are seeking more expats. 🤷🏾‍♂️😁.

There's literally agents in Bangkok helping people every day. It's only the agents that were getting dozens of bank accounts per day. Their bank contacts got spooked by the crackdown and stopped helping the agents. But other agents that were using other banks are still working just fine.

There haven't been any rule changes or policy changes, it's just people being scared and stopping what they were doing. If they think their activities were raising a red flag they are laying low for a while. But low volume agents are still doing everything they have been doing.

You should be able to get a Non-o for retirement in Thailand. You'll need 800k thb in the Bank for 2 months before you apply. Once you apply, they should give you an extention for 1900 thb. At least that's how it did work. Biggest thing is getting a Bank account. Try different ones if they say no.

Was given this great advice “It is only difficult to open a bank account if you don't qualify. You need a long term non-Imm visa. Apply through the Thai embassy on-line. If you qualify they will grant your visa for 90 days. Arrive in Thailand, find somewhere to live (hotel for a few weeks will suffice) and make sure they have reported you living there. Then visit Immigration and ask for a Residency certificate to open a bank account. They will even address it to the branch of the bank you'd like. Open the account with the minimum funds required for your type of visa. Once the funds have been in there for the required period, usually 2 months, apply for the 12 month extension'

Hope this helps

Thomas *******

Nong Khai immigration will not give you a certificate of residency to open a bank account. They will give you one for a driver's license after the Dept. of Transportation requests it. The banks in Nong Khai won't request it so immigration won't grant it. Went through this in November. The banks also will not accept a copy of the CoR that I provided to get my driver's license. I had a 90 day Non-O Evisa, TM 30 and a driver's license and was still told no until a kind lady helped me out in Si Chiang Mai at KrungThai bank. That was after I went to every bank I could find in Tha Bo, Nong Khai and Si Chiang Mai.

first time in Thailand?
Henrik *****
Don’t get your hopes up.

You will still have a hard time to get a bank account, until you have stayed several months in Thailand at a permanent adress on a long lease.

Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.

That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.

Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.

Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so reluctant depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.

The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.

, I.m curious to know what the Thai Embassy in Cambodia tells you what you.ll need to get your Non O visa there. I can tell you you will need to show a statement of bank funds, but they never told me how much. (I currently am living in Siem Reap but worked in Phnom pehn before getting a retire visa here)

Can we try to stay in contact? I have been to the Thai Embassy in PP less than two years ago, and still have the Non O visa application.

I thought the point of this was to get the Non O visa in Cambodia, so you have the correct visa to, open a bank account, in Thailand.

The people at the Thai embassy in PP, said show funds from a bank account, but wouldnt answer me ask to how much to show. For instance, if you show you had 800K( thai baht equivalent from a Usa bank) would that work?
John **********
@Paul ******
the requirements are listed on the phnom penh consulate website, they don't stipulate a Thai bank
Wylie *******
@Paul ******
when you apply for the non-o outside of thailand the financial requirements do not need to be in a thai bank account. You can use proof of funds from an account in your home country.
Paul *******
@Wylie ******
yes...that sounds logical.

My guess is that they want to see a bank statement having at least the equvilant of 800k thai baht. Does this seem correct?
Micah ********
@Paul ******
Sounds like you're referring to the requirements for Retirement (Non-O) visa. Those funds would need to be in a Thai account, but I think there is some grace period with the timing to allow you to open an account (don't quote me).

I believe OP might be referring to a Volunteer (Non-O) visa, which has a lower requirement and can be satisfied by a foreign account.
Paul *******
@Micah *******
no, we were both refering to getting our first 90 day Non O visas. I.m aware of the banking requirements to convert it to the retirement statis, 12 months. Thanks....

When you apply for a 90 day Non O from a Thai Embassy , such as in Cambodia, they want proof of money in a bank( not a Thai bank) I was just sharing my experience that the staff in the Thai embassy, in Cambodia,never mentioned how much money to show, to just get the Non O. I.m aware of the 800K baht, in a Thai bank for two months, to convert it to the 12 month retirement.

Cheers....
