What should a Thai citizen consider when applying for a UK tourist visa?

This question is not for getting a visa into Thailand, but for a Thai person getting a tourist visa to the UK. She is working, 50 yrs old and will have a return flight.

Has anyone had any problems with a Thai friend getting into the UK for a holiday, and meet a friend?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the difficulties a Thai person may face when applying for a UK tourist visa, particularly regarding the need for strong evidence of intentions to return to Thailand. Key points include the necessity of demonstrating financial stability, property ownership, family ties, and prior travel history, which can all support the visa application. You need to write letter saying your going to sponsor her and give your address plus last 6 Months payslip plus proof of your address this is what I had to provide when my partner came in April but she is government hospital worker and has a 10 year old son don't know if this makes sense

hi Wayne thanks for writing. As she works for the government and funds her daughter in university, and lives in a government property, I feel she can get good documentation supporting her visa. She would stay with me and as a retired guy, I have pensions and savings to support a 2 week stay. We haven't met yet but I can't see what that has to do with anything. By the time next July comes we will have over 1 year of daily txt and chats. Thank you

I have just been through this and my girlfriend is in the UK now. She has little or no liquid assets but is the Thai family Matriach and there is a family home, ownership shared with her siblings. I confirmed I was meeting all expenses and submitted copy UK bank statement as evidence of my ability to meet any costs incurred. Also confirmed she would have travel insurance. She will need to go to a VFS office for Bio pic and fingerprints so that could involve some expense. Processing time is 3 weeks from submission and the visa is valid for 6 months - giving six months from date of arrival in UK. Start compliling your data now and read everything you can, using common sense when looking at Visa Agents websites. It can be done without using agents and with her having little funds available but you will need to demonstrate your own good repute as a Sponsor. Her prior travel records will prove useful.

thank you. Our relationship is only 3 weeks old but we have connected so well so marriage is not really on our minds. I think it will be best that we meet next year, get evidence that we have met and spent time together, then try in 2027. I hate our immigration treating Asians this way, she only wants a holiday!!!!
Stuart ***********
From what you have stated, I think you might have a very difficult time providing sufficient evidence. Would it not make more sense for you to visit her in Thailand until you get married, as it's easy for you. Remember agents cannot help you by bribing someone for this process. So if you are going to go through with it, you need to get her evidence organised and indexed, in the same order immigration ask for it, so that the people making the decision have no excuse to deny her. Good luck.

Stuart thanks for your thoughts. I think it makes more sense for me to actually spend time with her next year, get evidence, then it will be 2 years of communication and meeting twice which will give more backing to us being in a relationship. She has no interest moving here and I won't move there as I have to have my prostate cancer checked every 3 months, plus she is happy working until 60. (I would then be 80!!) So our arrangements of seeing each other twice a year is practical. As for marriage, I don't think either of us want that.

@Harrys ***********
lovely photos, you look like a nice couple. I understand your dilemma. I think that is the best solution for now. I can see why she would not want to move as she has a good job, healthcare and pension if she stays here. Have you thought about asking your medical people if there is any way that you could be tested in Thailand once a year instead? The medical facilities here are excellent and that way you could spend 6 months each year here.

Stuart hi, I could do but I have a lot of sport that I am involved in. After 43 years of unloving marriage, I feel I have found the right woman. Now, when we physically meet next summer, I might feel different and want to spend more time with her. Thing is she works. I am an artist and backpacker, so I could base myself in Chaing Mai, I thought for 3 months, so I am Alone there during the day and I don't want this to be a sexual relationship. I love to travel too, so I don't know how this can work. I wouldn't expect her to give up her life and move to the UK. With Putin threatening a WW I would be better living in Thailand. I never thought of that having owned a house and car, with friends, so 2 x 3 months probably works better for me.

I understand and only you can fully know your circumstances and what you need to be happy for the rest of your life. I too have had bad experiences with marriage with western women (as most men that come to Thailand have) and what people say is true. If you choose the right Thai woman (and you seem to have done that), they are everything you dreamed being married would be like. My wife is the most perfect woman I could have imagined; intelligent, charming, funny, positive, loving, caring, affectionate etc. Every day is filled with love and laughter and she appreciates every little thing I do. Like you stated, see how you feel after you meet and do whatever suits you, take lots of pictures together to use as evidence and then, with good organisation/presentation of evidence, she should get a tourist visa to visit you. Good luck Harry.

Stuart I am happy you found her, and I guess you are younger than me and she wasn't tied to staying in Thailand. Suyada is because of her girls and we did discuss whether she would leave Thailand and it was an easy no . As I said I could stay there 3 months at a time but for 7hrs a day I am by myself as she works, and as I am an active person besides swimming and playing snooker, I might find it hard to entertain myself. It would be a new challenge. She also has her friends, her gym and 3 nights dancing which I wouldn't want her to give up, so I can't quite see how me living in Chaing Mai for 3 months would work. Maybe I have to do my travels each visit and stop with her for a month. Factor in health travel insurance too. As I said I will wait until I see her. It might end up a good friendship for 2 x 1 month every year. Marriage is not likely.

Sorry that was a rambling reply, must be the red wine. If I was younger things might be different. What is important is that I have a loving companion even if I spend 6 months a year with her (and only evenings and weekends.... Not ideal)

She must have solid reasons to return to Thailand. Eg. Property , investments, a business, family.. a job alone won't cut it because she could earn more with a job in uk/us/aus etc. Also you've got to show you've got a real and long term relationship.

...I went through all of this chap...glad it's behind me now.

thanks. It's ridiculous that our government penalise Asians so much. She supports one daughter through university, and has a senior job in the local government education department and parents. She owns land but not a business. No idea about her bank account though. Do I need to save all WA data proving that , come next summer, we have had daily conversations for a year?
Gordon ***********
@Harrys ***********
keep all records of holidays together, timestamped photos together and with friends and family ..in nice places not bars. Records of your financial support to her, and be able to show translated Deeds of land or anything she owes. As well as her employment status. ..govt employee is good. If you do all that next time, and still get a refusal then go complain to your Westminster MP. he should write to tye home secretary on your behalf and get a favourable response, ..saying apply again and be sure to tick every box. ...thats what happened to me and my GF , now wife

I haven't had a problem, but others have. Note, no matter how long she says she will stay in the UK, the visa is always for 6 months. Do you know what travel history she has had before. Does she own property. Does she have 100,000 in the bank. Does she have children or elderly parents. Who is paying her expenses to and in the UK?

Andy hi, she works for the government living in government property, supports one of her girls at university, I have no idea of her bank balance, I will pay expenses for the two weeks here. She has travelled to Vietnam and some other countries, but not Europe. She will pay for her flight. What do you think? We are looking at next summer
Andy **********
@Harrys ***********
If she is not paying for the entire trip herself, you should write a letter of invitation, explaining the nature of your relationship. She has no dependants and no concrete ties to Thailand besides a nondescript job. She can't afford the trip herself. I only know what works for me, which involves marriage, registering a business, making a sure a bank account has money in it. My wife had a 5 year black listing in Malaysia.

she has a senior position in the education dept and two daughters, one that is dependent on her. I assume she has her parents but I haven't asked. This relationship is in its infancy and it will be a year of contact by the time next summer comes. Surely as long as she shows she can pay her way and/or I provide evidence I can support her for 2 weeks, how could it be a problem? I am 71 and she will retire in 10years, and until then we would have our separate lives, meeting twice a year. This isn't some bar girl looking for holiday sex!! I do understand our government suspect every Asian person want to abscond and stay illegally, that's why I posted the question. Thanks for your thoughts
Andy **********
@Harrys ***********
Home Office might worry thst a low paying teaching job in Thailand isn't enough reason for her to return home. Her parent's might well be dead given her age. The bar girls aren't looking a holiday fling. Stick in an application now. It's going to cost you £120 or so to find out, unless she wants to use an agent. Agents can ensure that she doesn't make a mistake in the application, and can advise on the invitation letter. You need 6 month bank receipts, proof of accommodation, such as mortgage statement, deeds, lease agreement. I also provided salary slip.
