What are the chances of getting a tourist visa for my Thai girlfriend who has no job or property?

I've just returned after a[nother] month in Thailand & can't go back for six months. Boo-hoo!

I'm thinking of trying to bring my girl over to the UK on a tourist visa. However, she's got no job & owns no property. I own my own home in the UK & have 'enough' dosh & would be happy to 'vouch' for her & pay for a return ticket.

Can anyone with experience please tell me about the realistic prospects of getting her a visa ... preferably without having wrestle [burocratic & legal] crocodiles?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The chances of obtaining a UK tourist visa for your Thai girlfriend are considered low if she has no job or property in Thailand, as the UK immigration authorities prioritize evidence of strong ties to the home country to ensure applicants will return after their visit. Financial backing from you, including proof of funds and a return ticket, alongside documentation of your relationship, may improve her chances, but it's still important to prepare comprehensive evidence of her background and your situation. Engaging with official resources, such as the UK government website or consulting forums, may provide additional insights into the application process.

People overlook the most important aspect, which is not even asked in the application process. You concentrate on answering the questions and providing evidence of relationship and your good standing in your home country. But the only thing the consular services look for is a compelling reason to return to Thailand. For example job, house, family, bank accounts, commitments, obligations etc.. Without that, your millions in the bank, large house and 20 year relationship is more likely to garner refusal because why indeed would she want to return. The humble application from a not so well off person applying for a girl who has lots in Thailand is way more likely to succeed than the millionaire taking a pauper. Visit visa’s have been abused so much that now you have to prove you will return. Photos of the two of you on a beach don’t cut it.

Get on the old Thai Visa forum
********************
and go through the relevant threads.

There are people there who post up actual lists of the documents they submitted and the results etc. and I both took advice and contributed when I was in a similar position. No need for parasitic agents.

The gust of the posts so far is true, that they need to be sure she will return. If she does not have a job with salary and bank statements then what about any record of your sustaining her and just how did she earn money.

It isn't that hard to get it put together but get someone to read it through and try to form an objective opinion.

If you get refused, you used to get some idea of why you were refused and you could address that in a subsequent application.

But the main things are straightforward, assuming she doesn't qualify in her own right on income grounds to fund her holiday. Family, job, will job be available if she is away for a period of time, property in Thailand, etc.

As for you, your finances aside, it is how long you have known her, communication, support, etc. again, not rocket science.

Can't she just travel to your country as a tourist (without mentioning relationships with you) and then just keep staying there with you? You're gonna take care of her anyway. Why can't she live there without any govt approval status? Or as alternative, you may try to find a company in your country which runs the business of hiring foreign workers from SEA, as maids, nurses, etc. And let her slip in through this gap. There are always some ways, we need to learn to think out of the box.

British immigration very difficult - as you can see from these replies.

Totally different visa, and I don’t suggest you apply for any visa in the US or Europe that does not fit your case. I mean, you could hire your girlfriend as a contract laborer at a canning factory or as a lettuce picker on a farm, but that doesn’t quite work for a trip to Disney. Also, your girlfriend may not like being labeled as a laborer… 🙂

If you have the means to hire migratory workers and cover the visa requirements, you can probably set other things in motion to help them qualify for a tourist visa without all is that hassle.

yeah but I mean,,,,you always can find some sideways
Frank **********
It is very difficult for SE Asians to get a tourist visa for a lot of western countries. The UK, US, and Australia are particularly difficult.
George *******
@Frank *********
At the same time I have seen SEA workers brought to these countries as contract workers (maids, laborers, etc). It might depend on a form of contract and choosing the right legal ways to achieve your goal. There is no such thing as unachievable goal, no matter the laws, etc.

Never had a problem in the past it’s all about YOU .. you will supply bank statements, home etc that you can be her sponsor during her stay and that you/ her can convince the British embassy ( Bangkok ) that she will partake in NO work what so ever , purpose of stay ( holiday ) what will you be during during time , taking care of her ….. she will need to take all you info along with the correct forms filled out you can get on Gov.uk .. and be interviewed at the embassy … OR go see an agent in for example Pattaya there quite few , same info ( she needs a passport obviously) and you need to have copies of yours , I think the going rate is around £500 .. job none .

. I see no prbs in any of that, except that she lives near Ubon - miles from anywhere! One hour flight to BKK.

well if you went down that route ( not using agent ) you’ve got no choice as the British embassy/ Consulate, is in Bangkok .. are there agents in Ubon? , I don’t know 🤷🏽

I was asked how long I had known her and then for photographic proof. Bit of a battle the first time but was easier the next time.

I'm not banned - just had stuff to do here so had to return ... voluntarily.

A little different, but my girlfriend was able to get a US visa under similar circumstances. I wrote a letter explaining that I live in Thailand and wanted to take her with me on my next trip to the US to visit with family. They asked for my proof of living in Thailand and for my financials to demonstrate that I could finance the trip. At that point, we had been together for years and she had a few hundred thousand baht in savings. I don’t think it was just one thing, but we demonstrated enough reason to return and finances for them to give her a 10 year visa.
Frank **********
The letter was on top of her packet of documents, and she asked him to read it when she walked to the counter. He read it, and went through all of her other documents. I can not speak to what his thinking process was or what all he considered to make the decision, but I helped her demonstrate that she had ties to Thailand for that particular officer. We got the idea from a friend of hers that got a tourist visa a few months earlier. Your mileage may vary.

@Frank *********
how did the letter help with her visa to the US? was she able to show to the visa officer? usually they do not even ask for any documentation.

Important to note, this was after one failed attempt applying without anything from me.

The next time you come here... If it is possibly love.... Consider buying her property that won't break the bank... You can get a studio condo in Jomtien for $30 000 or less.
Bruce *********
@Dallas *****
I didn't know they were that low in price over there
Dallas ******
@Bruce ********
Yeah, obviously not new but studios in condominiums in Jomtien (about 5 miles from Pattaya) advertised for about 950 000 Baht regularly. I think this price can go down further going forward, as more and more people scramble for the exits). There is a huge glut of properties all over Thailand (often people are waiting for things to get back to normal). Also fair to note...many levy and upkeep payments are not being honored at the moment....you can see a lot of the gym's equipment is getting worse and in need of major service.
Bruce *********
@Dallas *****
I see properties like the Atlantis and the grand solaire offering 7% returns annually for 3 years if you buy a property. I thought about doing this but I don't know if it's a good idea. Still being able to buy a condo for under 30,000 US does seem appealing.
Dallas ******
@Bruce ********
I think it is a great idea if you are doing it for personal living. If you are doing it as an investment (buy to rent).....I think there are and will be better opportunities going forward.
Bobby ********
Might be a job for an agent. I've taken my lady twice to UK and twice to Australia, but they wanted statements of employment, salary statement, title deeds for land she owns. They like to know they have ties to go back to!
Gordon ********
One of the most important things for the visa decision maker to see is strong ties to where she lives. If no job or house then you would need to show sufficient funds in Her Thai account for the trip, this cannot be a suspicious 1 off transfer from you. Even if you do that there are no guarantees. Previous travel also shows good visa behaviour and increases the chances. Good luck
Will ************
Go on gov.uk and look at the visa application, it can be done.
Mark ******
You've opened yourself right up to the trolls here mate. Amongst the abuse, you may get a few sensible replies. I too have just started the Visa application for my GF who doesn't have direct into bank salary as is paid cash and rents her house. I'll let you know how it goes! (Put your thick skin on.... you may need it, here come the keyboard warriors lol)

Should be fine, proof of funds from you and a return ticket will be ok. Proof of correspondence is also helpful.
Mark ******
Yes i will, i only started yesterday and haven't got very far as needed her passport, ID card... i am putting work as home address as they sell street food! I think if your stable and can support and provide return ticket shouldn't be a problem! Hey... who knows though! They can only say yes or no so worth the effort applying!

You will struggle. The no. 1 thing they look for is substantial reason to return to Thailand. If she has no job, no property she would struggle in my opinion.

If she has a Thailand passport she should have no problem coming back Thailand

That isn’t what he said. He said without a job or property there is no strong reason for her to return to Thailand in the eyes of the Home Office(High probability of overstaying in UK)
