TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are leaving Thailand on January 14, you are technically not overstaying as your permit states you can stay until the end of that day. Most commenters agree that you can leave without any issues as long as you go through immigration before midnight on January 14. If you happen to be a few minutes late, you might incur a fine of 500 baht, but this seems to be a minor concern for short overstays and is often waived, especially if you inform the officers it was an honest mistake. In general, if you comply with check-in and immigration procedures correctly on January 14, you should not face any significant penalties.

1) 14th is the day to leave, so you are fine. The stamp says you are permitted until the 14th. Simple.

2) if you depart via an airport, 1 day overstay is waived - as in: there is no fine (but I think you get a stamp into the passport) IMPORTANT: that is only at airports, and not at land borders!

3) worst case, one would pass immigration one day early and stay between immigration and the gate ... there are hotels and simple sleeping areas for just that purpose

4) overstay per day, when you hand in your self in at immigration, would be THB500

So for yourself: you are just fine. The rest was for other corner cases.

On a completely different matter, when I arrived at Suvanabhumi Airport on
*****
/2025, I was given a 60 days visa exemption stamp and assured that this could be extended by another 30 days. Today,
*****
/2026, I went to Korat Immigration office, to be told that there has since been a change in that policy - and now only a SEVEN days extension is granted ! As my return flight to Europe is on
*****
/2026, I will have to leave Thailand on
*****
, probably into Laos and obtain another entry stamp - but the Immigration Officer was not sure for what period that will be given ! If it's only going to be for another 7 days, then I could be facing a substantial penalty on finally exiting the country ! Anyone had any similar experience and know for what period a new entry stamp is granted ??

Ok from your comment I’d guess that you have a history of entries to Thailand using visa exempt and extensions. Immigration are clamping down on people doing that and will only issue one 30 day extension in a year and another for 7 days.

That said because it’s based on a calendar year and we are in a new year you should be able to get a 30 day extension (because you haven’t had one this year). However each immigration office can interpret their rules differently so results may vary.

You could ask to speak to a supervisor and see what they say, but that may not work well for you or it might.

Thanks for your advice, I have only typically visited Thailand once per calendar year, except for last year, when I came twice, including the instance mentioned. But my understanding was that because I was exiting in the following year, I would still obtain a 30 days extension. I did indeed appeal to the more senior officer on duty , but she also said that I was only entitled to a 7 days extension.

I have taken your advice and posted this matter separately - thanks.

This is EXACTLY what will happen as I did the exact thing in November.

I was permitted to stay until the 26th of November but departed on the 27th of November.

Hard to read but there is an additional stamp under the departure date stamp (I have white brackets around it to show). That stamp says essentially “Allowed one day” and signed underneath by the duty officer.

There was no fine.

There was no issue when I returned two weeks later on my second Visa exempt entry for the year.

They did ask my future plans and I said I will return next time with a tourist visa. That was all.

IF you make it to the airport without being arrested you will just pay a small fine and continue your trip. If, on the other hand, you are caught on the way to the airport (and I was once on a bus which was stopped on the road and everybody was forced to show their passport including the entry stamp) you will be taken to the Immigration detention center - I understand that it is a very depressing place to be.

500 baht fine. We overstayed 6 days (wife and I) and paid 6,000 baht cash at the airport. They did stamp our passport with a slightly different shaped departure stamp. It was weird we had been locked inside a hospital on a mandatory lock down during covid and couldn’t leave and we brought the paperwork with us to the airport. It made no difference.

I got caught with the same thing last year. Thai immigration count the days of arrival and departure as two days - so if you arrive today 4th January and leave tomorrow 5th January it's counted as two days.

I was charged 500baht for one day overstay - my friend who travelled with me didn't get charged.

Never overstay, it just show’s laziness and irresponsibility, this can count against you, if you run into some unexpected problems,in the future, they will have a record.

Also don’t listen to cheap charlies telling you don’t worry about it just pay the fine, it’s all good, these people are the usual rule/law breakers in Thailand who don’t last long. If you know Thai immigration officials higher up the chain, listen to them, it’s a no no.

You perhaps have misunderstood that you have until 23:59 on 14 January 2026 to depart Thailand

However, if you perhaps might depart on 15 January 2026, then the overstay fines might be waived, but an overstay stamp notation would be made to denote that overatay fines were waived
