Hey group!

I’m applying for the 6 month ME tourist visa from my home country in January, and could use some guidance from someone whose done this before. For some background, I have a fresh passport, haven’t been to Thailand since 2015, will have the bank statement needed. So...

- did you get a feel for what the employment letter needs to state? And why they want it

- were you questioned about your employment at all? E.g. “will this company still be employing you while you’re in Thailand/will your job be waiting when you get back?”

- Based on your experience do you have a feel for which would be best - getting a letter of employment from my retail job stating that they’ll employ me again when I’m back, or registering myself as a sole trader travel writer so that I’m self employed and can provide myself a letter but no self assessment?

I’d appreciate any guidance, but if what you’re writing is speculation/just something you’ve heard please make that clear, as theres lots of inaccurate info already out there and I’m really looking for reliable, first hand experiences ideally! ☺️ Thank you! Xo

A friend of mine has previously applied successfully for 2 METV’s from London and he wasn’t working at the time of application .. he made up a letter on a word document and handed it over, no questions asked They were only interested in wether he has the £5000 to finance the trip

If youre unemployed they will reject yo? what kind of folks can get 6 months off to play tourist??
Ron *******
@Tony *******
many UK employers will allow a gap year. You don't get paid though

@Ron ******
I know. Incredible that they require that! how many employees can get 6 months off to go travelling? I wouldnt imagine they sell many of those visas in britain in that case

the OP is applying in London. London want what they want.

This is all Vancouver requires: Passport or travel document with validity not less than 6 months. The passport must be valid for travelling to Thailand.

Visa application form completely filled out for each passport

One recent official passport photograph of the applicant taken within six months of application

An applicant has a permanent resident/a permit of stay in Canada

A copy of a bank statement showing a balance of the amount equal to no less than 200,000 (Baht) per person or 400,000 (Baht) per family

A copy of round-trip ticket or itinerary for at least the first trip

A copy of hotel reservation for at least the first trip

Fee: 250 CAD

@Ron ******
so a visa that 99.99% of people could never qualify for! lol

100% you will be rejected if your unemployed. You need to be employed either with the letter from your employer or certified and signed off accounts if your self employed
Ron *******
London are pretty stringent on a proper letter from your employer. I certainly wouldn't get a letter to say you wont be employed whilst in Thailand. If you search the page, there are a few examples from London. Even with a big bank balance, if your unemployed, they will reject you.

If your self employed, you will 100% need certified accounts.

If you have the necessary funds, I would just go for a letter from your current employer. It makes it easier for them to just tick that box and move on to the next application.

Self employed would mean more paperwork, more thought, more work. No one wants that.

If you visit Thailand as a Tourist on a Tourist Visa you signed the box on the application form: I declare that my purpose of the visit to Thailand is for pleasure, this means simply I declare that I shall not work during my holiday in Thailand.

This is where my questions come from. Some people like Samuel Fila suggest that they won’t want you to be working at all whilst in Thailand because they will be wary of the line between working and working illegally. Other people suggest they want you to still be working for a UK company while you’re there to prove you’ll have the funds coming in to stay and you won’t be looking for a job there because you already have one. This is why I question whether or not to register as self employed (I do freelance writing work every now and again anyway) and submit a letter from myself or a letter from my current employer

Ok mate. I will let you and Robert do all of the replying.

Seeing Robert prefers to delete information that conflicts his i will leave you to it.

@Tod ********
. Perhaps the Op was unaware of the visa exemption option. Its worth mentioning based on that alone as she plans to enter as a tourist. I have no beef with you mate. But Robert at times needs to check his own facts before discrediting others. His knowledge on detention centre last night left a bit to be desired. And his smart arse reply to me mentioning up to 60 days on exemption is exactly the thing he tells everyone else to not do.

now now, that's not how I meant my warning
@Ste***
and you know it.

Even you have to admit that a LOT of topics get dragged off course because of people posting stuff that isn't asked for.

All I'm asking you for is a little consideration.

You certainly are knowledgeable about the visa extension process and you answers help to people, which is definitely appreciated.

I also had to provide that at the consulate in Switzerland. They just looked at the letter and saw that there was a logo and some business address. That was it. They didn't even read it, they just wanted it for the folder.

@Patrik *******
's post may be encouraging, remember that different consulates do require totally different documentation.

I'd say your best bet is to contact the consulate in London and see exactly how stringent they are about that self assessment letter..

You're from Uk. You can get up to 60 days without a visa anyway.
Tod *********
@Ste***
which might be true but wasn't what was asked in the thread :/ , so unless you're a mind reader ;) I'll urge you one more time to stay on topic.
Steven ***************
@Tod ********
. If the lady doesnt require more than 60 continuous days here , then an employment letter and visa arent necessary.
Tod *********
keep ON topic, they're asking about the employment letter for getting a 6 month METV

NOT about any other way to get into thailand.
Steven ***************
You should know as the resident "expert" on this forum that it can be extended for another 30....
Robert *******
WOW, New rules for the UK. Last time I checked it was a 30 day Visa Exempt Entry.
Robert *******
Best way is to contact the Thai Embassy or Consulate where you like to apply. This because I have to guess where is your home country.
Steven ***************
You're overthinking it. They just want to know you can afford to travel and have a job to return to.
