Right everyone… I’ve been to apply for the DTV visa in Penang, Malaysia…

I have to go to KL to get a stamp from the UK embassy on my employment confirmation letter. For some reason payslips, a contract, and employment confirmation letter isn’t enough.

It must be stamped by a UK embassy or by your company(original document with stamp). I assume this will apply to anyone who is applying is person.

The documents needed are as follows for those applying for the workation option:

-Visa application form (you can fill this out at the embassy)

-Proof of 500,000 THB (I used PayPal statements)

-2 Passport sized photos of yourself

-Employment contract

-Employment confirmation letter with a stamp from your company or home countries embassy.

-Passport

It seems like they are ensuring there is no way people can lie about their employment or whatever with this measure… it’s a logistical nightmare though.

I recommend anyone coming to Malaysia to just apply in Kuala Lumpur as your embassy will likely be located there (check before hand)

I also called them to ask if I can provide any other documents instead of having to go to my embassy and they said no. 🙃

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their experience applying for a DTV visa for Thailand at a consulate in Penang, Malaysia. To qualify, applicants need various documents, including a stamped employment confirmation letter from a UK embassy or their home country’s embassy. The application process is complicated and requires proof of funds (500,000 THB), two passport-sized photos, an employment contract, and a passport. Many are discouraged by strict verification measures. The user advises applying directly in Kuala Lumpur for efficiency and calls for clarification on document requirements.

Hey
@Kieran ******
Can you post an update on how it goes with getting that stamp? Once you have it :).

I have a US company and I am wondering if I should go to the US embassy for this. I am not a US citizen though. I know I can get it notarised online but doubt that will help since the consulates want to see an original stamp.
Vladimir **********
any examples of employment confirmation letter? what info should it include?
Ollie *******
The problem is I am contracted under a USA company but a U.K. citizen. If I get the company to stamp my contract will this be sufficient?
Tom ***********
@Ollie ******
I'm the same; a UK national contracted to a USA company for remote work. Please keep me posted if you find anything specifically related to this. Thank you.
Andi ***********
@Ollie ******
Yes, the company stamp is to provide evidence of legality. It is common place in Asia.
Steinar *****************
They can probably do a certified true copy of the letter. This doesn't rally prove anything but the Thai embassy might like it. You might have to do this at the US embassy, the UK embassy might not want to certify copy of a US document. For the US embassy you need to get an appointment, which might take days or weeks.

Hi
@Kieran ******
, do you have any long term visa in Malaysia or you entered with visa-exempt?
Kieran *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Diane *****
Entered with visa exempt. UK passport holders receive 90 days on arrival.
Diane ******
@Kieran ******
thx, good luck and hope you get the visa! Pls keep us updated here!:)

PayPal statements for 500k baht? You keep that much in your PP account or is it linked somehow to another?
마리오 ***
@Joren *****
I was not aware of that - thank you!
Joren ******
@마리오 **
PayPal has a high yield savings account, not the *worst* place to keep a chunk of money
Bryan *******
Did they ask you to provide an employment contract and employment confirmation letter or did you just give both to them? What is the difference between both documents?

Thank you for sharing your experience!
Kieran *******

@Bryan ******
I just brought the contract and they told me I needed the letter so I got one sent over quickly from my employer and then they told me it needs to be stamped 😂

@Kieran ******
Yikes! I hope the rest of the process runs smoother for you. Please keep us updated.

One person, I think US citizen, posted a few days ago that he is self-employed. He wrote a letter and provided last years tax return. I believe he said it was accepted.

Any idea how they will deal with the fairly common arrangement of sub contractors?

So say I use my own company to sub contract to large corporate.

They pay my company and my company pays me.
Biff *******
Can’t you just go get a stamp made? I suppose it’s a bit late now, unless you make a new application in KL, with a ‘company stamp’ on the letter?
Stephan ******
@Kieran ******
- The stamped confirmation letter, by any chance, do you know if it needs to be the original document or a scanned copy is acceptable? - Thanks
Kieran *******

@Stephan *****
really not sure though they were not very helpful and didn’t have the best English.
Stephan ******
Thanks for replying; I just reread the Vientiane Thai Embassy site, says copies with company seal, so hopefully scanned copies are okay. :-)

@Stephan *****
I think it needs to be the original stamp/document.

Are you employed by a

UK company and are a digital nomad living in Thailand working for them ?

I’m a UK citizen employed by an American company.

@Kieran ******
Good Luck with your notarized letter from the UK Embassy
Andi ***********
@Marshaun ******
Yes, you can. You can also do from Laos. I'm in Japan like you and planning to do it in Laos.

ok thank you
Andi ***********
@Marshaun ******
Take note of the stamp and also company registration. If you working for a company, make sure company registration number is on paperwork.
Marshaun *******
@Andrew ********
ok thanks a lot
Andi ***********
@Marshaun ******
Im not doing it real soon, maybe Sept. I contacted Thai Embassy in Laos on Saturday and they told me what you need to do to apply in person.
Marshaun *******
@Andrew ********
can you please keep me updated on the process for you?

I can't imagine what kind of stamp the UK embassy could put on any of those papers - they certainly don't know anything about your company or your job...
Kieran *******

@Jeffrey ********
I agree. I have no idea. That’s what they told me to do. To be honest I don’t think they even know what to do.

I imagine the UK embassy will need to confirm my employment? Not sure
Michael ********
@Kieran ******
they might want you to notarize the document with the embassy. I don’t think the embassy could verify this easier, but simply paying for a notary service probably makes it seem more legit.. I also think it adds a level of legal protection for Thailand against you so if for some reason you can’t support yourself they can point the finger at your country and say “hey you notarized this document saying he makes money why is he XYZ issue?”

Also one other idea is the simple request of a notary service adds a logistical and financial step to weed out those that can’t handle it (and thus might not be able to handle living in Thailand) AND those that were lying (they are afraid to go to their country’s embassy to notarize documents).

I don’t know tho. I’m not an expert just pure random speculation here.
Marek ***********
@Kieran ******
Embassy also functions as notary service (document certification). I had to do this recently.
Jeffrey *********
@Marek **********
That's correct, but the only person whose signature they could notarize would be the OP's, on a self-serving affidavit - which would prove nothing about the genuineness of the documents.
Marshaun *******
So I don’t have to apply from the US. I’m currently in Japan visiting Malaysia soon to apply
Marshaun *******
Should I apply directly from KL?
Kieran *******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Marshaun ******
probably. If you don’t have a stamped document you will need to visit the US embassy.
Marshaun *******
@Kieran ******
ok great thank you for the information. Can you please keep us updated on the stamp process?
Andi ***********
Thanks for the update, useful info.

-Employment confirmation letter with a stamp from your company

This is confusing. Private businesses with "stamps"? More information would be great.
Sam *****
@Kevin *******
maybe time to make a Thai company manufacturing stamp machines for foreign companies!

She wasn’t very clear but showed me an example letter and it was basically the same with a stamp of the companies logo. I really can’t understand why signatures are any different.
Sam *****
@Kieran ******
Would that be the equivalent of a letterhead?
Andi ***********
@Sam ****
ink stamp of company name/address.

I don’t think so. It needs a literal stamp. Lol

@Sam ****
it's a very Asian thing to have official company stamps / seals.

Requirement in Thailand. Evety page and photocopies have to be stamped with it for visa and work permit applications.

@Adam ****
Yeah… I wish they were more specific…
Sam *****
Thank you, that explains a lot. As a business owner in the UK, the only stamps we are involved with is when using legal notaries.
John **********
@Sam ****
it used to be the case in the UK that every Ltd company had a company seal for exactly this purpose but they changed to signature some time ago
Tod *********
Thank you for that concise update
@Kieran ******
(y)

I was just looking to see if the Penang website was updated yet to reflect the DTV requirements but it has not been 😕

I think you're one of the first people to report in about applying for a DTV at a thai consulate in a nearby border country

No problem. They had announced it on their Facebook and I did contact them before hand. Such a nightmare though just for a stamp 😂
