What should I do about difficulties applying for a DTV visa at the Thai consulate in Malaysia?

Currently in Penang Malaysia applying for a DTV and these people are horrible human beings. They had me return back there 4 different times, each time asking for a different document outside the required documents on the requirement list.

They are asking that I have a signed house lease in Thailand. Also a certified bank statement (which I have never heard) I called my US bank and they said there is no such thing. The letter from my US company that is on a company letter head and signed. They said it needs to be stamped.

At this point I’m done with Thailand, their immigration is too arrogant and racist for my taste.

How do I report this to their superiors and to those who got a DTV, did you have to submit a certified bank statement?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their frustrating experience applying for a DTV visa in Malaysia, encountering repeated requests for additional documents from the consulate. They express dissatisfaction with the treatment received and seek advice on how to report the issue. Many commenters suggest trying other consulates, like those in Jakarta or Ho Chi Minh, as they have been reported to be more accommodating. Others offer tips on document certification and emphasize the need to prepare for variation in requirements when applying for visas.

Just reenter thailand by flight and youll get 2 months at entry ....that should give you enough time to sort out an agent in thailand that would be assisting you with getting the right paperwork ect ... normally if you have the paperwork complete there are no problems in making the application and getting the required visa ....courage brother ....sometimes one is tested on the path ....

Mexico also asked ne for a certified letter from my investment company stating that I am the sole owner of the account identified on the investment statement, even my name was clearly the only name on my investment account. When I contacted Fidelity and Vanguard, they told me they don't do such things. It took me one month back and forth, wasting my time and energy to explain again and again what I needed. Both investment companies refused to do the letter. It wss an hassle. Finally, they both did it

.So, Malaysia is not the first one to ask for that.
Gene *********
This is just a thought, maybe they are making it hard for you so that you will hire an agent. Thai's looking out for Thai's.

Agents can not help about DTV, since you have to apply outside of Thailand, so they can’t bribe a specifik person at a Embassy.
Ruth *******
Whoever at the bank told you told you that there’s no such thing as a certified bank statement was mistaken. Try again and if you continue to get resistance, include a link to numerous resources online that explain how common such a request is for purposes that require more secure confirmation of finances, such as legal matters and visas. The request for a signed letter from your employer is not uncommon. You’ll need to ask about the stamp, since stamps are not common in the States, but they seem to be in SE Asia.

I do find it odd for an American to be complaining about the difficulty of getting a long-term visa, due to a bit of paperwork, considering many citizens of SE Asian countries can’t even get short-term visas to visit the States.
Eric ******
@Ruth ******
they don't need a Visa. Just go to Mexico and walk right in...

I have a feeling they need some "under the table money". Feed them few hundred baht and they should dance like monkeys

Write off Malaysia. If you still want the DTV try Cambodia, Jakarta and Taiwan but don't forget to check the website for any changes before you go. Unfortunately it all boils down to where you apply as to what documents they ask for and Malaysia is making it extremely difficult to the point that it's the worst place to try. You aren't going to be able to report or complain to superiors, not because they don't have any but they'll just say you didn't qualify and it won't change anything. It's a very westernized way if thinking that just doesn't work here. I totally get it, it's frustrating and you haven't been treated well but you'll drive yourself nuts if you can't move past that. I hope one of the other embassies works out.
Henrik *****
You should have applyed in US, where they know which documents are available and how the documents are formated, that would have made things easier.

In Thailand most documents need to have a rubber stamp, to be regarded as official, they havent yet got into the computer age without stamps.

Certified ( notarized ) bank statement, because the Immigration Officer, wasn’t sure the statement was from a legitimate bank, since the statement didn’t look the same as in Malaysia.

And didn’t want to make a mistake, that could be disapproved by the boss. ( asking for advice from other colleagues or superiors will be a “loose of face” which is rule number one to avoid.

All visa application is done on “ discretion of the officer” you meet, so a report to superiors, would make more harm to you than the Embassy staff.

Forget Thailand. Different policies every week. Cheaper, better and a lot easier in Vietnam. Yes, you are restricted to a 90 day visa, then a trip to the border starting in the morning, back for supper. Traveling in a comfortable visa bus. Efficient and easy. Lived here now for one year under the 90 day visa policy, never any issues.

Very entitled perhaps? Have you got the slightest idea how hard and vexing the immigration process into the US would be?
Rogerio ******
@Liz ******
one has nothing to do with the other. OP is complaining about Penang embassy requirements which are very different (and easier) in different locations.

US tourist visas are hard because 1) usually is people with lower economic power potentially using it to illegally stay in the US and 2) at least is a lot more consistent across different countries.

That’s good. It means not every man and their dog will be coming into Thailand. Leaves it for people who have a bit of motivation.

the only people applying for DTV are annoying nomads and influencers who are already here, the visa won't bring more people, and it being difficult to obtain would not keep anyone away.
Tommy ********
@Aaron ***************
it’s pretty easy to obtain though.

And not all digital nomads are influencers. I agree, the latter are knobs. They are cats in real life but on social they are just blah.

That being said, how British is Thailand going to turn do you think? Seems like it’s a British thing right now the DTV, hoping people who come and not wanting to bring their passive aggressive life’s here. Just a thought.. 🫡
Aaron ********
@Tommy *******
it is easy to obtain, but if it was to be difficult it wouldn't Keep people away anymore than it's currently attracting people here.

It's great for people who are already bumming around here and want an easier life for the sake of a few quid.

They wanted to set up a cumbersome mechanism. There is an answer to all this;

Bypassing immigration for reasons of those who live in Thailand know well.

Afterwards, it is convenient for those who want to request this DTV to stay in Thailand...........🤔🤔🤔

I was an Immigrant in the US. I became a US citizenship after I applied for a green card through marriage with a US citizenship. It was pretty easy, but I have family members who went through hell to have a green card ( residency) in the US. When I applied to have my citizenship, there wss an agent responsible of my file, this man tried to give me hell for no good reason. Thanks God, I had a very good lawyer ( I paid her 4000$ usd), she was a member of some organizations related to immigration, she told je clearly what this Agent was doing was not right and she can make hom loose his job if she file a complaint. She she talked to the agent abd made him know that what racist and illegal. She threatened the agent to report him if he doesn't stop the foolishness. She also requested that my file be transferred to another agent. So, immigration officers always abuse their power in any country. My cousin waited 22 years for a green card in the US

Immigrants applying for residency in USA suffered and waited sometimes years. I have five family members who waited for mire than 10 years, finally they contacted them for the residency, then the office thst was supposed to do the last step never did anything. They hire lawyer to find out what happened, they keep telling them to wait, they will contact them. It has been years since they received this letter, they still never heard from US immigration. Finally, they lost hope abd gave up
Michael *******
@Jo *********
my sister moved there and took up citizenship 30 years ago and raised a family there, has adapted and accepted their rules even though she doesn’t always agree with them, I have done likewise with Thailand you take a place as you find it not as you like it otherwise it’s a miserable existence - Thai bureaucracy can be mind numbing at times but that’s their way not for me to be critical and certainly not suggest they are racist.

Check on their website for a list of requirements. I think if you have proof of stay in Taipei (like a hotel booking) they’ll allow you to apply there.
