TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions among expats in Thailand reveal various concerns and updates regarding visa amnesty and immigration requirements. Many users expressed frustrations over last-minute changes in policies that affect their residency, financial investments in visas, and reporting obligations such as the TM 47 (90-day report). While some expats are seeking clarity on the future of extensions for NON-O visas, others have shared personal experiences about dealing with immigration and the impacts of global travel restrictions due to COVID-19. There's a mix of sentiments, from relief at living in Thailand to anxieties about potential fines and restrictions.

My cristal ball told me so more than a month ago.

Some here thought it necessary to laugh it away....

The ball is open for apologies šŸ˜‰šŸ™šŸ¤”šŸ˜‚

This was always going to happen, they need the farangs there to keep spending,

until the high season starts and the new STV is introduced for 3-9months in November.

That will be the end of visa amnesty, having served your purpose.

@Ronald ********
when the high season starts? Don't think there will be a high season this year.

I donā€™t understand how do you get stuck Most other countries do send an email stating the status of Immigration They also mention weather you should plan to go back your home country.

I receive a message from the USA embassy

I donā€™t understand the problem that overstayers put their self in itā€™s their fault they didnā€™t listen
David **********
@Michael *************
yes some people are stuck.

Examples include being unable to afford the high airfares for a big family. Mixed nationality couples who cannot return home together. People who genuinely feel safer here than at home. For Australians it can be impossible to go home because of government restrictions on numbers entering and quarantine facilities cannot cope. There's many other reasons as well, read some of the articles about why people are stuck overseas at the moment. I'm not stuck, I'm working but I know many people who are genuinely stuck. Some have had multiple flights cancelled and cannot even get their money back. Your attitude is somewhat ignorant as well as lacking in empathy.

Well Dave thatā€™s all good but when I was there on my retirement visa I received a message from the US embassy on January 23 stated there is a virus in China make arrangements to come back to USA.

I donā€™t know about you or others but I do try to be prepared

But I guest most donā€™t look at that way.

Letā€™s not forget my wife is in Thailand and Iā€™m here in USA.
David **********
Yes same for Australia but as it turns out it is much safer here than back at home anyway so that wasn't very good advice was it? Surely much smarter to let people stay in place rather than travel around internationally if there's such a high contagion risk? The advice was for tourists to return home, not for those with a reason to stay like work and family.

well said

So have to apply by the 3rd. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø seems like another headache.

Itā€™s annoying I paid over 40k, for my W/P but to not have this stress every 6 weeks itā€™s worth it!

6 months + free visa, canā€™t complain. ā˜ŗļø
Oliver ********
the problem is they've cried wolf too many times now and most of the overstayers won't do anything between now and the end of next month.
Todd *********
@Oli***
there is nothing they can do:... until the rules change. U havenā€™t been paying attention for 7 months?
Oliver ********
@Todd ********
surely the vast majority can apply for a long term visa if they plan to work or study visa, buy an elite visa if they are so rich they don't need to work, or return home (as most tourists would have done several months ago at the end of their holiday anyway)? i'm not saying there aren't some with unique circumstances that are literally trapped here (that's another matter), but the problem is many of those who aren't trapped will assume they can just stick around and wait for another extension because immigration keeps extending.
Todd *********
@Oliver *******
ā€˜surelyā€™ is hypothetical and the opposite of reality. If they are wealthy enough to afford Thai elite / ok. But surely you have noticed that despite their 1 MILLION BAHT investment.. they are not permitted to enter the country. Does that sound smart to you? It it does / ur an idiot. People clearly do not wish to go home. This is the reality of ā€˜freedomā€™. Maybe not part of whatever your nation is, but itā€™s how the world works. And if thai immigration itself does not offer clear options to exit amnesty, they are abetting the existence on agents and people are understandably nervous. But you should know all this already
Oliver ********
@Todd ********
Thai immigration has made a lot of adjustments to allow people to extend or apply for new education or business visas in-country that could previously only be obtained at Thai embassies abroad. I agree 100% with you they could be clearer about the new rules but it can be done if the applicant uses some initiative to reach out to immigration and explain their situation. Thai immigration are amazingly flexible if you have a genuine case (I twice had long overstays forgiven pre-covid but obviously I had to spend some time there explaining everything and showing all the evidence). As for freedom here compared to other countries, I don't think many countries allow people who have overstayed visas to stay indefinitely without visas nor make it as easy to stay as literally paying $13k for a 5-year visa regardless of what country you come from or what you do.

@Oliver *******
No Ed visas are being issued. The ministry of education even wrote a letter to immigration 11 August requesting in-country issue but was not approved.
Ivan ************
@J**
Ed visas certainly were being issued but it required a quite hefty special fee and/or agent.
Jay *****
@Ivan ***********
maybe they were a special Ed visa!
Ivan ************
@J**
even some immigration offices are taking the "special fee" directly.
Ivan ************
@Oli***
my home country (Ireland) extended everyone up to January 2021.
Todd *********
@Oli***
all countries have similar situations in place now to facilitate transitions during pandemic. And as it appears today - they have finally realized this. And there will be at least a 60 day extension for the thousands on amnesty. Anything less is a failure man
Warren *********
Why not have a 6 month extension for all non O visa's with half the requirement a a 1 year extension i am sure this could help things for now ...
Jonathan *********************
What about the TM 47 (90 days report ) I didnā€™t do it before 26th September then with this mean I donā€™t need do it until 31 October?
Tim ******
@Jonathan ********************
You needed to do 90 day report before the 1st of September. Go in there as soon as you can and just play dumb. They may fine you 500 Baht, but itā€™s better to deal with it sooner than later.
Jonathan *********************
@Tim *****
yes I will go tomorrow , but really I thought Iā€™m under the amnesty hahaha
Tim ******
@Jonathan ********************
The bottom section. Itā€™s confusing but the amnesty for 90 day report ended 31 August.

Glad they waited til the last minute, just a 1-week notice ahead and I could still be in Thailand happily spending baht. Now back in USA.
Ivan ************
I think that was sort of the point, to get people out who could actually leave.
Marcel ***********
Glad I waited till last moment haha
